What if you’ve been trying to heal your mind… while your nervous system has been stuck in survival mode all along?
For so many years I thought I was simply exhausted.
I blamed my lack of energy on working too hard, getting older, not sleeping enough, or not being motivated enough.
But what I eventually realised was that I wasn’t just tired.
My nervous system had become so familiar with stress that my body no longer remembered what true rest actually felt like.
When we spend weeks, months, or even years in fight-or-flight, our bodies are constantly preparing for danger. Our heart beats faster. Our breathing becomes shallow. Our muscles stay tense. Stress hormones continue circulating through the body, even when there’s no immediate threat.
The body doesn’t know the difference between running from a tiger and constantly worrying about emails, finances, relationships or the future.
This is why so many people feel anxious for no obvious reason, struggle to switch off, wake up feeling exhausted, or feel disconnected from themselves.
The beautiful thing is that the breath gives us a direct pathway back home.
Your breath is one of the few things that can consciously communicate safety to your nervous system.
Try this.
Breathe in gently through your nose for 2 seconds.
Then breathe out slowly for 4 seconds.
Repeat this for just 5 minutes.
That longer exhale stimulates the vagus nerve, activates your parasympathetic nervous system, and gently tells your body, “You’re safe now.”
Healing isn’t always about adding more.
Sometimes it’s about remembering something your body has known all along.
Slow down.
Breathe.
Listen.
Your nervous system is always listening to the rhythm of your breath.
And perhaps today… that’s exactly where your healing begins.
🍃 If this resonated with you, save this for the days when life feels overwhelming, and share it with someone whose nervous system could use a little reminder to breathe.
