A huge thank you to one of our lovely patients for capturing and sharing this fantastic photograph! We think you'll agree – it's a stunning building and one we're incredibly proud to call home.
Many people will know that St Andrew's House Medical Centre moved into the building in April 2014, transforming this beautiful Edwardian building into a modern healthcare hub whilst preserving so much of its original character.
Originally built in 1909 as Waterloo Road Girls' Secondary School, the building has served the people of Stalybridge for well over a century. Over the years it has also been home to Tameside's Teachers' Centre, council offices and even part of the local police station before beginning its next chapter as a place dedicated to health and wellbeing.
We even have a special connection to its past – one of our own members of staff attended the school before it closed. It's lovely to think that the building continues to serve the community, just in a very different way.
We feel lucky to come to work each day in a building with so much history, character and architectural beauty. While the inside has been sympathetically modernised to meet today's healthcare needs, many original features remain, helping to preserve the story of this remarkable building.
Today, Stalybridge Resource Centre is much more than just a GP surgery. Alongside St Andrew's House Medical Centre, we're proud to share the building with Adams Pharmacy, and Stalybridge PCN Hub and most recently, following major renovations – including the restoration of the original flooring on the second floor – we were delighted to welcome Stalybridge Community Clinic to the building, who are now based on the top floor.
Together, we're able to provide a wide range of healthcare services under one roof, making it easier for our community to access the care and support they need, close to home.
One day, we'd love to see the building's magnificent original entrance brought back into use. It would be a wonderful project, although one that would need the time, care and restoration such a beautiful historic feature truly deserves.
Thank you once again to our patient for sharing this wonderful photograph and reminding us just how privileged we are to work in such an iconic part of Stalybridge's history. ❤️
