I’m very good at giving but not so good at…
Receiving. It is definitely taking me a little longer to relax into…
Someone gave me a beautiful present this week and I noticed something ridiculous.
A tiny part of me felt uncomfortable.
Not because I didn’t love it. I did.
But because receiving something — without having done anything for it, earned it or immediately giving something back — can still feel surprisingly vulnerable.
And it made me wonder where we learn that.
To give freely to other people, but feel awkward when the same generosity comes back towards us.
To look after everyone else without questioning whether they’ve earned it, while somehow believing we need to earn the same care ourselves.
Maybe that’s part of the noise too.
All those little rules we’ve collected about who we’re supposed to be.
Be useful.
Don’t need too much.
Give more than you take.
Put everyone else first.
Sometimes switching off from the noise isn’t about finding a quiet room.
Sometimes it’s noticing the voice that says you don’t deserve that...
and choosing not to listen.
Because this week, people have given to me…
Someone cooked for me.
Someone gave me flowers.
Someone bought me coffee.
Someone gave me a beautiful gift.
Someone gave me a huge hug that I needed.
A client gave me more than I asked for.
And people gave me the most gorgeous compliments too.
And instead of immediately wondering what I need to give back...
I’m practising receiving it.
Maybe we all deserve some of the love we give away so easily. Eh? 😉🤍
Switch off the noise. Live life more!
