🌈Starting nursery or reception is a massive milestone. For early years SEND children, a new classroom environment can feel like a sensory and emotional overload. 🧸✨

🌈The secret tool used by early years experts?

✨SOCIAL STORIES✨

🌈What are they?
Short, simple, personalised picture books that explain exactly what will happen during a specific routine, like morning drop-off or carpet time.

🌈Why do they work for early years learners?

* Literal language: Uses simple words (“First I say goodbye, then I play”) instead of vague instructions.

* Visual learning: Combines short text with real photos of their new setting.

* Emotional safety: Gives predictable answers to “Who will be there?” and “What will we do?”.

* Reduces anxiety: Turns the scary unknown into a familiar, repeatable routine.

💡 Co-Regulation Tip for Parents & Teachers:
Read the story together during a calm moment. Use real photos of the child’s actual tray, coat peg, and classroom toilet.

Repetition is key—read it daily before the term starts!

🌈Sending your neurodivergent or medically complex child to nursery brings a completely different layer of anxiety.
You aren’t just worried about typical “drop-off tears” —you are trusting others with your child’s unique ways.

Take a deep breath…

🌈Here is what you DO NOT need to worry about this September:

🧩Immediate adaptation: Progress is never linear. Expect development to “pause a little” before you see growth and progress.

🧩Flawless communication: Staff will learn your child’s cues, you’ve no doubt prepared them well, sharing all the relevant information with them beforehand.
You can also ask your child’s SEND Practitioner and health professionals to model strategies to train/support staff where needed.

🧩Rigid schedules: Inclusive nurseries will and should adapt to your child’s specific sensory and medical needs.

🧩Peer comparisons: Forget “standard age” checklists. Focus solely on your child’s individual timeline and goals.

🧩Sensory meltdowns: if they hsppen educators will no doubt have seen this before. Give yourself and your little one a break, it’s all so new!
You’ll get there… deep breaths (easier said than done at times, I know🫶🏻).

🧩Staff judgment: True professional educators will be your team, not your critics.

🌈You are doing an incredible job. Your child is going to build an amazing new network of support on their next adventure into nursery/school. Enjoy the journey. 🤍

🌈Interactive stories are one of my favourite activities to do with little learners, heres why…

They can help:
Sensory regulation: Incorporating touch, sound, movement and lighting can help children to focus and engage more readily.

Encourages participation: Giving a child control over a prop or button builds a sense of independence.

Supports non-verbal communication: Visual choices or switches let children express preferences without needing words.

Strengthens physical motor skills: Reaching for a texture or hitting a switch develops intentional movement.

Deepens conceptual understanding: Real objects (like a wet sponge for rain) make abstract ideas concrete and real.

Builds connection: Shared interactive moments foster strong feelings of safety and trust with the storyteller. Who doesn’t want that with children they’re working with? 🥰🌈

Let’s bust a common myth today: “They are too young specialist support—let’s just wait and see.” 🛑

I hear this a lot, but early intervention is everything!
A child’s brain develops faster in the first five years than at any other time in their life. 🧠✨

When Practitioners step in early to understand a child’s unique profile, we aren’t trying to rush a formal diagnosis. Instead, we are:

1️⃣ Finding their hooks: Figuring out exactly how they learn best, looking at their learning profiles in order to support parents/caregivers.
2️⃣ Setting up environments: Making sure their nursery or home layout supports their sensory, learning, communication & physical needs right now.
3️⃣ Preventing frustration: Giving them communication tools before behavioral challenges start.

You don’t need to “wait and see” until primary school. Your child can be supported from day one!
Evidence shows the earlier we offer support and intervention the better outcomes children and families have. 🌈

🌈Moving from a favourite playtime activity to getting dressed or leaving the house can trigger big emotions for some children.

If this applies to a little learner that you know, give this quick 3-step routine a try:

1️⃣ The 5-Minute Warning: Don’t just say “time to go.” Use a visual cue such as a sand timer or an auditory countdown clock/timer so they can see or hear time passing.

2️⃣ The “Bridge” Object: Let them carry a favorite small toy from the living room to the car. It bridges the gap between the fun zone and the transition zone.

3️⃣ Use Clear Reduced Language: Instead of saying “Get ready,” be more specific with your instructions. For example… “First, shoes on. Then, coat”.

Simple tweaks make a world of difference! 💛
