Adult weight gain in pre and postmenopausal women increases the incidence of postmenopausal breast cancer, weight loss can reduce risk. To focus on a diet typical to that of the Mediterranean as it significantly reduces endogenous oestrogen levels in healthy postmenopausal women by as much as 40% who are at high risk. Carbohydrates have widely differing plasma glucose concentrations and insulin responses and a diet high in low- GI (Glycemic index) foods, which in turn increase dietary fibre and lowers serum glucose levels is beneficial in keeping plasma glucose concentrations and insulin responses low.

Stress raises cortisol, which increases appetite and often pulls you towards sugary, fatty foods for a quick hit of comfort. At the same time, it lowers leptin (your fullness signal) and raises ghrelin (your hunger signal) — so cravings feel stronger and harder to ignore.

Skipping meals makes this worse. Regular, balanced meals through the day help keep blood sugar — and cravings — steadier, so you’re not fighting your biology on top of everything else.

You’re not lacking willpower. Steady, balanced meals help keep cravings in check, so you can work towards your goals with less friction.

What’s your stress-day craving? Tell me below 👇

The breakfast you’ve eaten every morning for the last 20 years hasn’t changed.

But your blood sugar’s response to it has.

I’ve spent three years watching this happen in real time — running the NHS diabetes prevention programme and working on continuous glucose monitor research. Same toast, same portion, same person… but a completely different curve on the graph once oestrogen starts to shift.

That’s not a willpower problem. It’s biology. Research on the menopause transition consistently shows that as oestrogen declines, cells become less responsive to insulin. The encouraging part: a landmark year-long trial in postmenopausal women found that diet changes alone improved insulin resistance by 24%, and diet combined with exercise improved it by 26% — proof that this shift can be worked with, not just endured.

This is why “just eat less” advice falls flat in midlife. It’s not about eating less. It’s about giving your body what actually supports it now.

One of my go-to breakfast swaps: kefir yogurt, a small handful of crushed nuts, a few berries, and a spoonful of an omega-3 seed mix.

It’s a genuinely well-studied combination, not just a “healthy-sounding” bowl.

🔹 Kefir’s fermentation produces compounds that several trials link to lower fasting glucose and improved insulin sensitivity — your gut health and your blood sugar are more connected than most people realise
🔹 Berries bring sweetness with fibre attached, so they don’t hit your blood sugar the way toast or cereal does
🔹 Nuts and seeds add protein, fat and fibre ahead of any sugar in the bowl — which the evidence on meal composition shows blunts the glucose spike that follows
🔹 The omega-3s support the low-grade inflammation that tends to creep up as oestrogen drops

Same five minutes at breakfast. Completely different metabolic conversation.
