This week on the Dr Louise Newson podcast, Dr Louise is joined by GP and lifestyle medicine physician Dr Clare Nieland to discuss why hormone treatment and lifestyle changes work best together, and how taking a personalised, whole-person approach can improve health outcomes for women.

They also explore how addressing the underlying causes of symptoms may help women reduce medication that's no longer needed.

In fact, research involving 1,081 Newson Clinic patients found that 39% reduced or stopped antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication within three months of starting hormone treatment.*

Among women prescribed testosterone alongside estradiol, 40% reduced or stopped their medication.*

At Newson Clinic, we believe every woman deserves individualised, evidence-based care that's tailored to her symptoms, hormones and long-term health.

Do you spend half the month wondering why you don't feel like yourself? your hormones could be playing a role.

Hormone levels naturally rise and fall throughout your menstrual cycle, so it's not unusual for your symptoms to change throughout the month too.

For some women, these changes are mild. For others, they can have a significant impact on mood, sleep, energy, relationships and everyday life.

PMS and PMDD are common, but they're also highly treatable. At Newson Clinic, we see so many women with these conditions who, with personalised, evidence-based care and treatment, see significant improvements.

If your symptoms are affecting your work, relationships or quality of life, it's worth speaking to one of our specialist clinicians: https://bit.ly/BookingsFB

A study of 1,508 Newson Clinic patients found that up to 1 in 4 women may require transdermal estradiol doses above licensed levels to achieve therapeutic (optimum) levels.

This reflects what we see in clinical practice: even with the same patch or gel, absorption between women can vary considerably. Differences in skin type and thickness, for example, may influence how effectively estradiol is absorbed.

Hormone treatments should always be individualised and optimised. At Newson Clinic, decisions are informed by your symptoms, treatment response and how you feel over time.

If your symptoms are persisting, further assessment may help identify why. Book an appointment with a Newson Clinic expert: https://bit.ly/BookingsIG

Have you ever experienced vaginal dryness, itching, soreness, pain during s*x and needing to urinate more frequently but not realised these symptoms could be linked to hormone deficiency?

These symptoms are referred to as genitourinary syndrome and they’re some of the most overlooked and undertreated symptoms of hormone deficiency, despite the availability of safe, effective bioidentical hormone treatments.

Our latest patient-reported symptom data shows how these symptoms improved after around three months of bioidentical hormone treatment at our clinic.

This week on the Dr Louise Newson podcast. Dr Louise is joined by Mind Mommy Coaching, motherhood coach and maternal mental wellbeing expert Laura Guckian, to explore how hormonal changes after birth can affect maternal mental health.

Around 15 - 20% of women experience depression and anxiety during the first year after giving birth*. Yet the role of hormones is often forgotten.

Laura shares how severe postnatal mental health difficulties led her to seek psychiatric care when her son was 10 months old.

Years later, diagnoses of autism and ADHD helped her understand experiences that had previously gone unexplained.

They explore how the rapid fall in progesterone, estradiol and testosterone after birth may affect the brain, and why this shift can be particularly impactful for neurodivergent women.

Our clinicians regularly support women whose ADHD or autistic traits become harder to manage during hormonal change, assessing the full clinical picture before creating an individualised treatment plan.

Are ongoing aches, joint pains or headaches affecting your everyday life?

These symptoms are so common during perimenopause and menopause, but the connection between pain and fluctuating and declining hormones is not always recognised.

Hormonal changes can actually influence inflammation, pain sensitivity, muscle and joint health, sleep and mood.

That’s why for many women, addressing their hormones can form an important part of managing persistent pain.

Newson Clinic research involving 736 perimenopausal and menopausal patients found that 62% reduced or stopped opioid painkillers after starting hormone treatment (estradiol, progesterone and testosterone).

Could your hormones be affecting how you feel, think and cope day to day?

When hormones fluctuate and decline, they can affect mood, concentration, sleep, confidence and how you function each day.

However, the right hormone treatment can make a significant difference.

Our patients saw a 45% improvement in mood symptoms after around three months of bioidentical hormone treatment.

This was seen in Newson Clinic research with Liverpool John Moores University and Monash University involving 920 perimenopausal and menopausal patients treated at our clinic.

We’re proud to fund research like this to better understand how symptoms present in different women, improve individualised hormone treatment and continue shaping the care we provide.

At Newson Clinic, our patient-reported symptom data shows that brain-related symptoms are among the most common and severe symptoms experienced during hormonal fluctuation and decline.

Many women describe feeling unlike themselves, struggling with memory, concentration, confidence, motivation or simply feeling unable to cope.

Our clinicians understand the profound impact hormone deficiency can have on the brain – not just the body. That's why they take the time to understand the full picture before creating an individualised, evidence-based treatment plan.

This World Brain Day, we're sharing some of the brain-related symptom improvements reported by our patients after 3 months of bioidentical hormone treatment.
