The intense heat is beginning to ease, but I have seen quite a few patients experiencing increased fluid retention, such as swollen ankles or wrists.
There are several reasons this can happen during warmer weather, including blood vessels widening, which can cause fluid to pool in the lower legs and hands. Other possible causes include heart, kidney, liver, or thyroid problems, so it is important not to dismiss fluid retention as a minor issue and to have it assessed by a medical professional.
Once any medical causes have been ruled out, osteopathy may be able to help. Fluid retention can sometimes be related to restrictions affecting lymphatic flow or venous return (the return of blood to the heart). For example, it may be influenced by tension in the diaphragm, chest area, or other local tissues. Alongside hands-on treatment, we may recommend simple exercises to support overall circulation.
Fluid retention can be a sign that your body is under strain, and working with it holistically may help you feel healthier and more energised in the coming months.
