Try this Yin Yoga & Breathwork practice at home, noticing if your attention goes to your body, your breath, both or nowhere? ⁣⁣

Now lie or sit down.⁣

And simply sense into how your breath feels. ⁣

• Where does it begin and end?⁣
• What’s the movement like in different parts of your torso?⁣
• What’s the quality…⁣
• …and how’s the rhythm and pace?⁣
• How much effort is there…⁣
• … and how much ease?⁣
• Are there any differences between the inhale and the exhale…⁣
• .. and those natural pauses between each?⁣

What do you notice?⁣

Whilst I’m aware I often say this about breathing exercises, apparently this technique is particularly good for stress, both on-the-spot and chronic.⁣

The reason - so it goes - is that the double inhale pops open collapsed air in the lungs (I know, sounds a bit odd) and the controlled, extended out-breath slows your heart rate and moves you into an activated parasympathetic state i.e. calm and relaxed.⁣

Saying that, the best way is to just give it a go and see how it works for you. Try a few cycles for immediate stress relief and five minutes daily for ongoing issues. ⁣

Oh, and if you’d like to practise this breathing with me alongside other techniques to download your nervous system, then join me on Saturday at my workshop in The Swansea Wellbeing Centre

P.s. If at any point any breathwork like this doesn't feel right, then stop! A little disclaimer there:)

Learn simple breathwork practices to steady the mind in moments of stress.

✨ Where Breath Becomes Stillness ✨

In this two-hour workshop, I will be weaving together yin yoga, gentle movement and accessible breathwork practices into one continuous, calming experience. Rather than treating breathwork as something separate, you will work with the breath throughout, using it to soften tension, settle the nervous system and support a quieter, more meditative state.

I promise you will leave this workshop with simple, practical techniques you can use in everyday life, particularly in moments of stress, overwhelm or difficulty sleeping. It’s suitable for all levels including complete beginners, so do come along and join me.

As this season of growth gains momentum, my yogi friends and I have been exploring what we can observe and how we might learn from what’s happening in nature right now.⁣

When you consider growth, you might automatically think of moving upwards. Indeed, this is the dominant direction of what we see around us, yet if you look more carefully, you will notice that growth isn’t just up: It’s expanding backwards, it’s opening to the front and it’s flourishing out and to the sides. ⁣

And not only that, but for anything of significance to happen something quieter needs to be at work beneath it. Our roots need to be strong, deep and stable, and have the ability to hold and steady us as we grow.⁣

So as spring raises its pretty head, take a moment to observe the trees and plants around you, noticing how growth is often not a rapid upward rising but more of a multidirectional unfolding, sometimes fast and sometimes almost painfully slow.⁣

You might also want to take a moment to reflect on whether there something you can learn here about your own relationship to growth, both in your practice and everyday life.⁣

As we shift from one season to the next, we move from the element of water to wood. March 22 is also World Water Day, so let’s honour its still, reflective and receptive qualities before inviting the expansive energy of wood and the promises of spring.

Last week, I decided it was time to stop messing around with scarves and invest in a yoga strap. Inspired, I started experimenting with it in my own practice, and it reminded me of how useful (and perhaps underused) these props can be in Yin Yoga. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
A strap can …⁣⁣
⁣⁣
help regulate sensation before gravity takes over,⁣⁣
⁣⁣〰️
support you enough to release into a pose or simply keep you in that shape,⁣⁣
⁣⁣〰️
and (sometimes, just sometimes) a strap can invite just that little bit more stretch.
⁣⁣
Although gently of course, and without too much effort.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If you want to give it a go for yourself, I’ve shared some ideas in my latest blog post. We’ll also be utilising the yoga strap at this week’s class at The Swansea Wellbeing Centre so come and join us if you can!⁣

Like all props, using a strap in Yin Yoga can both support and deepen your practice.Use a strap to... • (oh-so-gently) increase the stretch • regulate your depth of sensation in a pose, allowing it to stop you before gravity takes you any further • keep your body in a particular shape – not ...
