This is Ken, he’s a show jumper and his guardian told me he had a lot of sensitivity around his poll area, so much so that he needs a special bridle that comes down to his 2nd cervical as any pressure on the poll makes him shake his head which isn’t ideal for either him or the rider.

So when I heard poll sensitivity, my mind went immediately to his sacrum/pelvic area. Why? because everything is connected. I simply held him with my hands for 20 minutes, nothing else, just holding him before proceeding with the treatment.

Sometimes less is indeed more 🫶🏻🐎

Inside the horse — a view we rarely get to see

All of the organs have been removed here, so what you’re looking at is the inner body wall.

The top of the image is the spine.
Running down from it are the ribs — each one a curved bony strut forming the thoracic cage.

Between each rib are the intercostal muscles. These are arranged in layers (external and internal), and they’re not just “filler”—they actively control the movement of the ribcage during breathing, expanding and compressing the chest with each breath.

That yellow tissue you can see is adipose (fat), sitting within and around the muscle layers, cushioning and supporting the structures.

Lining the entire surface is a very thin, glistening membrane — the pleura. This is a serous membrane that produces a small amount of fluid, allowing the lungs to slide smoothly against the body wall during respiration. In the living horse, there is no empty space here—everything is closely apposed, lubricated, and under subtle pressure.

What I find fascinating is how organised this all is.

Bone, muscle, connective tissue, and membrane—layered precisely to allow both strength and movement, protection and flexibility, all at the same time.

When you see it like this, stripped back to structure, it really highlights just how dynamic the thoracic wall is.
