MelodiCare Cymru was delighted to have lead a Stories & Music workshop in Clydach Library and a relaxed music session in collaboration with InclusAbility Swansea & NPT at Swansea Libraries this summer, as part of the Summer reading challenge.

Plenty of fun, imagination & exploring musical motifs and characters in Clydach and joy of exploring instruments and connecting through music at Y Storfa.

A Swansea mum has shared the moment her daughter heard music for the first time in intensive care - a memory she says she can hold onto "when so many other moments were taken away" 💙

👶 Kirsten, a mum of five, was expecting a straightforward pregnancy like she'd had before. Instead she was carrying identical twins and was diagnosed with a rare condition that meant one twin was losing blood to the other. At an 18-week scan, she and husband Dan learned that one of the twins, Blossom, had died.

🏥 At 24 weeks Kirsten's waters broke, and the couple feared they were about to lose their surviving twin too. She was rushed to hospital, though labour didn't progress. Baby Olive arrived weeks later, on her own terms, and needed further surgery and NICU care in the weeks that followed.

🎶 It was during that stay that Kirsten and Olive met music therapist Becca. Kirsten said: "Olive was asleep on me during her first music session but as soon as she heard the music her little body started to react. Her eyes started to twitch and she was wriggling her little arms and legs. It was a really special moment because I'll always remember the first time Olive heard music. It's a memory I can keep when so many other moments were taken away."

💬 She added: "It's something you can immerse yourself in that helps you escape from the clinical environment of the ward into a bit of normality for a while... To have a bit of normality and that opportunity just to connect with your baby, genuinely does make the world of difference."

🎶 The World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT) is pleased to share the revised definition of Music Therapy, developed through the work of the Working Group for Reviewing and Revising the Definition of Music Therapy during the 2023–2026 Council term.

This important milestone was announced during the General Business Meeting of the WFMT at the 18th World Congress of Music Therapy - Connecting Borders in Bologna, Italy (July 2026), marking a significant step in representing the evolution of our profession worldwide.

🌍 To make this definition increasingly accessible to the global music therapy community, new translations will be available over the coming week.
