Five Essential Oils I would recommend having in your life.

How often do you take a moment to sit down, listen to your body and check in with your feelings and thoughts. Like many of us you're probably guilty of rushing around juggling work with home life and trying to get all those jobs and tasks completed whilst at the same time thinking about the next lot of chores.
Finding the time to connect with yourself is a very important key to happiness and wellbeing. There are many ways in which you can do this, but today Im going to talk about essential oils that you can introduce into your life to restore balance and harmony in this somewhat hectic world.

Essential Oils have been used for centuries for their amazing health benefits and have become increasingly popular of the years. There is a myraid of choices to choose from and can sometimes be quite confusing as to which oil to buy, there are around 100 essential in the world each with their own unique aromas, properties and uses. So here is my very short list of 5 go to oils I like to have at hand all year round.

1. Stress Relief
We all get a little stressed now and then, which is a good thing, but sometimes it can get a bit too much. So if your feeling frazzled and overwhelmed, Ylang Ylang is a good choice. Th oil relieves nervous tension such as restlessness, anxiety, frustration, anger depression.
It is also a good oil for shock and trauma to the mind and body. Ylang Ylang has a beautiful relaxing aroma that will stimulate the nervous system to help you relax and unwind.

2. Promote Sleep
An old time favourite is Lavender oil and one that many people are familiar with. Lavender oil is known for its soothing, peaceful and restful qualities. It helps calm the mind, reliees headaches and irritability and promotes sleep due to its sedative properties.

3. Mood Booster
When it comes to mood enhancements, Frankincense oil is renowned for balancing emotions and easing irritability whilts creating inner peace. Known as the king of oils, it greatly enhances mood and increases engery by positively stimulating the limbic system which controls our emotions.
Frankincense is an aromatic resin from the Boswellia tree, its smell is that of pine and lemon combined with a dry woody aroma. It is one of my most favourite oils all year round.

4. Increase Confidence and Concentration
I think we all need a confidence boost now and then. Weather its for a job interview, meeting someone new, sitting exams or just being out of your comfort zone.
Peppermint is a great go to oil. It stimulates the mind with its sharp mnthol fragrance to help support memory, focus, concentration and mental performance.

5.Relieve PMS
Clary Sage is excellent for balancing female hormones and a great oil during menstruation. Clary Sage is a uterine tonic with an emmenagogue action, which means it can promote the healthy flow of blood during the monthly period. It helps to treat menstral cramps due to its anti-spasmodic properties. It is relazxing and can help balance the mood during this time. It has a herbal nutty fragrance.

How to use Essential oil

There are several ways in which to use essential oils

Inalation - this is the quickest mode of action.
This can be acheived by using an aromatherapy inhaler as and when required, it is small and compacts so easy to carry around with you throughout the day, or you can just sniff straight from the bottle.
Aromatherapy jewellery - Chakra bracelets made with lava stone beads. Add a few drops to the stones and inhale throughout the day
Diffusing - use 4 to 6 drops of oil added to the water, the oil molecules will dispusre into the air for you to inhale and at the same time purify and disinfect the air against pathogens and bacteria.
Massage - Treat yourself to a wonderful massage and soak up th benefits of the oils through your skin, or just massage yourself to the parts you can reach. your oils must be diluted in a carrier oil before appling to the skin.
In the Bath - a few drops of oil to the bath water and have a long dreamy soak to all the oils to be absorded ino your skin.

Notes on safety
Essential oils have many medicinal health benefits and they are very potent. you should never apply them directly to the skin unless they have been diluted in a carrier oil.
Some oils can cause photosensitivity such as Bergamot, so strong sunlight should be avoided after use.
Some oils are not reccommended during pregnancy and certain illnesses, so always check first.

Notes on buying essential oils
I would advise that you only purchase good quality therapeautic oils from a reputable manufacturer/supplier. I personally use Penny Price essential oils, they are a small family business based in the UK. There are many fake and adulterated oils on the market which will have no health benefits to you whatsoever, so please do some research before buying.

A very useful herb for skin conditions such as eczema, acne and psoriasis. It can be used to make herbal teas, as a lotion for the skin and even toss it into a salad.
Do not use Cleavers if taking pharmaceutical diuretics or severe kidney disease.

Dandelion -
Most people see this little powerhouse as a nuisance w**d that’s dug up and tossed into the compost heap, throwing away a very famous liver tonic herb. Dandelions help stimulate liver function and optimises liver detoxification.

Nettle -
My days before training to be a herbalist, I frowned upon seeing this so called w**d pop up everywhere in my garden. Out would come the tools, digging them up and cursing along the way. Now is a different story, since discovering their amazing medicinal properties. I now have a large dedicated area where they grow freely. I harvest on a regular basis, and use them to make teas, as a green vegetable and in salads and smoothies, I also make a natural garden fertiliser with them. Nettles are now one of my herbal best friends. Nettles contain high levels of calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc. They are rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, and some B vitamins. Nettle powder can contain up to 38% protein, along with all essential amino acids. They contain compounds like kaempferol and quercetin, which help reduce inflammation, Beta-carotene and lutein. Rosemary Water

Rosemary infused water is a natural wonder for your hair. Known for its ability to stimulate hair growth, combat dryness, and even soothe an itchy scalp.

The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of rosemary can also help reduce dandruff.
Use daily massaging it into scalp.

Homemade recipe
You will need-
A mason jar
A good handful of organic rosemary sprigs
Tablespoon of organic lavender flower dried or fresh
Tablespoon of cloves
Filtered water
Add ingredients to the mason jar then cover with water, seal the container and leave to infuse for a few days. The water will turn a light green colour
Strain out into a clean jar then put into a spray bottle for use. Keep in the fridge. I make enough to last a week and freeze the remainder in ice cube trays ready to pop out when needed.

Old garlic starting to sprout.

Don’t toss it in the bin, do this instead.
Separate the cloves, peel off the skin, in a shallow bowel/dish place the cloves root side down in a little water and place on window ledge, then watch the green shoots grow. Keep water topped up.
After around a week to 10 days you will have edible greens that you can put into any dish. Taste is a cross between spring onion and garlic, and good for you too.

Wind down your day with a herbal tea bath

You may be thinking "isn't tea for drinking" well yes it is, however, another great way to absorb the
benefits of herbs is by indulging in a luxurious herb infused bath.
So, rather than taking a quick shower, why not take half hour out of your day to soak in the bath.
You will be amazed at how much you can benefit from such a simple thing as a soak in the tub.

Taking a long soak in the bath soothes you physically and mentally, providing you with some me time. Combining the soothing effects of hot water and the power of herbs to relax your body and absorb the important compounds from the plants. If you have general aches and pains, you can also add some Epsom salts to the bathwater.

Whilst glittery bath bomb add a bit of sparkle, they can be full of chemicals. When I need to unwind and de-stress I prefer to soak in natural ingredients. When making an herbal tea bath you can use any combination of herbs that takes your fancy as there is no set recipe. You want to use enough herbs so that you can smell the aroma whilst you are taking that deserved relax time. There is a couple of ways you can prepare your bath depending on what you prefer.

Throw a couple of handfuls of your chosen herbs directly into the hot bath water, but if you rather not have the herbs floating in the water and have to clean up the mess afterwards, then you can make up a tea bag using a muslin bag about 5x7 inches to put your herbs into. If you would like a stronger herbal bath, you can brew some herbs in a tea pot then add it to the bath water. Just fill the pot with water and bring it to boiling point, put your herbs into the pot and allow to infuse for 20 minutes strain then add it to your bath water. This method is good if you are using barks, roots or woody parts of plants. Hang the tea bag under the tap to allow the hot water to run through it.

Soaking in a warm bath infused with herbs provides a quiet sanctuary in which to retreat and refresh.

The healing properties trapped in the herbs and released by the water can help boost your mood, calm the mind, soothe sore muscle and joints, opens pores, soften skin, and promote more restful sleep.
As the beneficial properties of the herbs are released into the water, a pleasant aroma fills the air which provides soul therapy, skin therapy, and aromatherapy all in one

If you are fortunate to have a garden full of herbs, then great. You can pick your own, if not you can buy most from herbal shops or online.

Below is a list of some of my favourite herbs and their benefits. There are many many more to choose, just find what you like then do some research on the benefits
