Passed away peacefully at St. Cuthberts Nursing Home on 3rd June, aged 85 years. Dearly loved by family and friends. Funeral service for close family is to take place at Thorncliffe Crematorium on Tuesday 23rd June at 11 a.m. Thanksgiving service and buffet to follow at Ulverston Parish Church from 12:15 p.m. onwards. The service will be in memory of both Barbara and Frank Harrison. All guests are welcome. Please wear bright colours. Family flowers only, by request. I had an interesting conversation recently with a very experienced funeral director.

He was talking about something he noticed years ago, early in his career. Not through criticism, just observation.

Outside the church, during services, things could become a little informal. Quiet chats. Familiar routines. Nothing disrespectful. Just human nature creeping in.

What stood out to him was not what was being said, but what was missing. Absolute attention. Stillness. Presence.

So he set a simple rule for his team.

Anyone attending the service, bearers included, would stand in silence. No talking. No movement. Just respect.

Sometimes for five minutes. Sometimes for fifteen.

To make it easier, he told them not to stare into each other’s eyes, but to focus on each other’s ties. A small detail, but a thoughtful one.

He said it changed everything.

Not for the staff.

For the families.

It reminded me that in this profession, it is often the smallest details that speak the loudest

For our next funding round, which starts in October 2026, Co-op Members will decide how we invest £3.5m through our Local Community Fund.

Are you a local cause looking for funding?

You can apply if you're a not-for-profit group that needs funding to deliver a specific project that benefits your local community. We will only accept one application per group.

If your funding application is successful, we'll work in partnership with you for 12 months.

Applications must be submitted by midnight on 24 June 2026.

Groups that can apply include:
Churches or Chapels that are excepted charities (that means they do not need to register with the Charities Commission)
Co-operative Societies
Community Benefit Societies
Community Interest Companies
Credit Unions
Registered Charities in the UK or Isle of Man
Schools
Social Enterprises
Scout, Guide or Woodcraft Folk groups
Any other group that can prove that they are not-for-profit
