Back-to-routine September can leave the nervous system running on high. Reflexology is one of my favourite ways to help the body shift out of "fight or flight" and back into "rest and digest," the state where genuine rest actually happens. You stay fully clothed, settle back, and most people are wonderfully relaxed by the end. Some drift off entirely! Based in Finchley Central. Book online or get in touch to book!

We've reach the last long weekend of summer!

However you spend this bank holiday, whether it's out in the late sunshine, pottering in the garden or local park, or simply doing very little at all, I hope you find a little space to rest. Those unhurried, restful moments do more for us than we often realise. Slowing down genuinely helps shift the body out of "fight or flight" and into the calm, restorative state where it does its best repair work.

So savour these last warm days. Autumn will be here soon enough, and with it my new season of tips on herbs and reflexology to help you stay well through the cooler months ahead.

Wishing you a happy and peaceful bank holiday weekend. See you in September.

Hay fever season is here and if you're one of the millions who suffer, you'll know how exhausting it can be.
Sneezing, itchy eyes, a blocked nose that won't shift and then the antihistamines that dull your symptoms but leave you foggy and flat.
There is another way.
Herbal medicine has a rich tradition of supporting the body through allergy season, not by suppressing the immune response bluntly, but by working with it. Three of my favourites:

🌱 Nettle (Urtica dioica) is a natural antihistamine that inhibits the release of histamine at the source.

🌸 Elderflower (Sambucus nigra) soothes and clears inflamed mucous membranes in the nose and sinuses.

👁️ Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) is specifically targeted at itchy, streaming, irritated eyes.
A bespoke blend tailored to your particular symptom pattern will always work better than a generic one off the shelf.
I've just published a full blog post on this if you want to go deeper into the science and understand exactly how these herbs work.
If hay fever is making summer miserable for you, I'd love to help. I'm based in Finchley Central, North London. Appointments can be booked on my website

Aloe vera. I think this one is seriously underestimated.
Most people reach for it after sunburn and that is where the relationship ends. But in clinic, it is one of my go-to herbs for gut health, inflammatory skin conditions and general irritation and reactivity in the body.
The inner gel contains a compound called acemannan, a polysaccharide that supports the gut lining and helps calm an overactive immune response in the digestive tract. It also contains natural compounds that work across multiple anti-inflammatory pathways at once, which is part of why it is so useful.
My latest blog post covers four key reasons I use it in practice, what the research says, and what to look for when buying it, because quality varies a lot.

If you’re in peri-menopause or menopause and feeling exhausted, it’s tempting to put it all down to fluctuating hormones. Sometimes that’s true — but this life stage can also mask deficiencies that are well known to cause fatigue and “brain fog”.

The big three I see people overlook are vitamin B12, B-vitamin complex (especially folate and B6), and iron. These nutrients are key for making healthy red blood cells and supporting energy metabolism. When they’re low, the body may struggle to deliver oxygen efficiently — and fatigue can become relentless.

Common signs that can overlap with menopause:

persistent tiredness / poor stamina

brain fog, low mood, poor focus

headaches, paleness

breathlessness on exertion

restless legs

with B12: pins & needles or numbness

If this sounds familiar, it may be worth asking your GP about blood tests such as full blood count (FBC), ferritin/iron studies, B12 and folate (and thyroid checks if needed).

A couple of important notes:

Iron isn’t a “just in case” supplement — it’s best taken based on results.

Some people are more at risk for low B12 (e.g., vegan diets, gut absorption issues, or certain medications like metformin/acid-suppressing tablets).

Alongside medical checks, supporting stress, sleep and nervous system regulation can make a meaningful difference — reflexology can be a gentle, supportive option during this transition.

I'm continuing with my profiles on berries for the time being. This next one has a particular medicinal use.

Cranberries contain potent plant compounds called proanthocyanidins. These create a "slippery" effect inside the urinary tract, making it harder for bacteria — especially E. coli, the most common cause of cystitis, to cling to the bladder wall. Instead, the bacteria are more easily flushed out when you urinate.

They're also rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, giving your immune system a boost, while unsweetened cranberry juice helps keep you hydrated — and hydration itself is key to washing bacteria away.

But there is a catch: sweetened cranberry juice can actually do more harm than good. Added sugar feeds certain bacteria in the bladder, encouraging them to grow. For the best results, choose unsweetened juice, supplements, or — most effective of all — fresh-pressed cranberry juice. It may be very sour, but true herbal medicines often don't taste that nice, and fresh-pressed juice can be incredibly effective at getting rid of cystitis. This is so important as it can reduce reliance on antibiotics. With antibiotic resistance becoming an increasing problem, it's good to know that nature has an answer.

While we’re constantly encouraged to try exotic superfoods like acai and goji, few realise that one of the most medicinally powerful berries grows quietly in our own backyards. The humble blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum) contains some of the highest known concentrations of procyanidins, a group of flavonoids with well-documented biological activity.

Procyanidins are known to support cardiovascular health by improving endothelial function and enhancing microvascular tone. They exert potent anti-inflammatory effects, modulating cytokine responses and contributing to symptom relief in conditions such as arthritis and seasonal allergies. Their strong antioxidant activity helps protect tissues from oxidative damage, with emerging evidence suggesting benefits for cognitive function, ocular microcirculation, and metabolic resilience.

Unlike many imported berries whose effects are often overhyped and under-researched, blackcurrant offers a well-characterized phytochemical profile with consistent, clinically relevant outcomes. With its deep roots in both traditional medicine and modern phytotherapy, Ribes nigrum deserves a central place in any evidence-based botanical protocol.

Sometimes, the most powerful medicine is the one that’s been with us all along.
