SOUND AS A SIGNAL 🎶

I listened to a fascinating lecture by Prof Stephen Porges, founder of Polyvagal Theory. What stayed with me was his description of SOUND AS A SIGNAL that can "bypass the thinking brain" for a period of time.

Porges explained that we can give a signal to the body through SOUND that travels through pathways involving the dorsal vagus nerve to the heart, gut, vascular system & autonomic nervous system.

In essence, SOUND CAN HELP SHIFT STATE.

Rather than beginning with thought, THE BODY RECIEVES THE INFORMATION FIRST. A signal is sent throughout the system & a message returns to the cortex that says:

"Everything is okay."

This is important because trauma, anxiety, depression & chronic dysregulation are physiological states WITHIN THE BODY.

Porges spoke about creating an ENVIRONMENT THAT HELPS CALM the autonomic nervous system, where we FEEL SAFE enough to give up our vigilance & simply EXPERIENCE OUR BODY.

He described humans as RHYTHMIC BEINGS & suggested that rhythm has the capacity to bring order & regulation where there may have been chaos & dysregulation.

When the nervous system begins to feel safe, it moves away from protection & towards RESTORATION.

Towards HEALTH.
Towards GROWTH.
Towards HEALING.

Research associated with Porges & the Florida State University College of Medicine has demonstrated SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS in areas including anxiety, depression, long covid, gut health & nervous system regulation THROUGH SOUND-BASED interventions.

As someone who works with sound every week, this resonates deeply.

People often arrive carrying stress, grief, overwhelm, tension or exhaustion.

Then the sound begins.

The breathing changes.

The body softens.

Something shifts.

Not because anyone is trying to think differently, but because the BODY HAS RECEIVED THE SIGNAL that it's SAFE ENOUGH TO LET GO.

Perhaps this is why sound has been part of healing traditions for 1000s of years.

The body has always understood what science is only now beginning to explain.

The drumbeat you feel in your chest is older than your fear. It comes from footsteps, ceremonies, tears, births, burials, and prayers carried across generations. When the world tries to make you small, place your hand over your heart and remember: a sacred rhythm does not need permission to continue.

No one shall take my power,
no one shall govern me,
I am wild in my wisdom,
I am strong and I am free.
Sovereign of body,
sovereign of soul,
I am sacred,
I am whole.

Two Songs in One Breath

The elders say
joy is a small messenger,
sent from the edge of morning
to wake the sleeping heart.

What is light does not mean empty.
A wing may carry old prayers
farther than heavy footsteps
ever could.

Two spirits rise together,
not to escape the earth,
but to remind the earth
how softly hope can return.

The smallest life
can hold a great teaching:
drink from the sweetness given,
then leave no wound behind.

So let the heart be bright.
Let it move with gratitude.
Even a brief song
can bless the whole sky.

The Keeper of Soft Power

The elders say
the strongest guardian
does not stand before the people
to be praised,
but walks beside them in silence.

There is a courage
made of snow, breath, and old patience—
it does not strike first,
yet no darkness can move it
from its sacred duty.

A true heart learns
to carry tenderness like a shield.
It knows that protection
is not always fierce;
sometimes it is simply staying near.

The ancestors leave signs
for those who listen with humility.
They teach that every life
has a circle to honor,
and every spirit a path to keep.

So walk gently
with the medicine of peace.
What is guided by love
can cross any winter
and still return whole.

DO NOT WALK ALONE TOO LONG

There are nights
when the moon shines so clearly
we can see even the things
we once tried to hide.

Five women stand side by side,
and no one has to explain how tired she is.
One hand resting on a back,
one arm gently holding a shoulder,
is enough to remind them
that life was never meant to be carried alone.

Out there, wind moves through the brush,
and blue smoke drifts between stone and wild grass.
Each woman brings her own story,
one disappointment,
one thing not yet forgiven,
one sorrow that has learned to stay quiet.

But when they stand together,
their cracks no longer feel shameful.
They only prove
they have touched real life,
have hurt, have understood,
and still have not lost their kindness.

Life is practical and plain.
Not everyone is glad when you rise.
Not every smile is honest.
Not every moonlit road
leads to a peaceful place.

So choose carefully
who is allowed to stand near your heart.
Good people do not make you smaller.
True love
does not turn your softness
into something it can control.

Some days,
the right friend
is worth more than perfect advice.
She does not fix your life,
does not tell you to forget quickly,
but stays close enough
to help you remember your worth.

Beneath the great moon,
five figures do not ask the sky to change their fate.
They simply stand closer,
keep one another from the cold,
and learn to keep walking
without leaving anyone behind.

Because in the end,
the strong person is not the one
who always stands alone.
The strong person knows
when to walk by herself,
and when to take the hand
that is honestly reaching out.

Tonight is the Full Crow Moon also known as the Worm Moon and the Sap Moon. Called the Crow Moon for the cawing crows around this time that signal the end of winter. As the earth thaws worms start to appear. And it marks the time when maple sap begins to flow and the annual tapping of maple trees begins.

The Spring Equinox is just around the corner, when both day and night are at equal length we are reminded to find our own inner balance. focus inward toward inner wisdom and self-analysis. This Full Moon is in the sign of Virgo, this will give us a keen eye for detail, we will see things and people and situations in our lives with crystal clarity, a light will be illuminated allowing us to see beyond the shadows. This is a time of cultivating and growing, just as the Suns energy and nature is doing at this time. Plant the seeds of new ventures, plan for the future, think about what it is you want and need and set about putting a plan into action. Use this energy for your own personal transformation, rebirth and regrowth.

Tonight's Full Moon illuminates our inner feelings and desires, so emotions can be quite raw and enhanced. The Virgo Full Moon means we may be over critical of ourselves and of others, try not to see the bad in everything instead look for the good. The Virgo sign is a very hard working and practical sign so use its energy for getting jobs done that you have been putting off for a while. Virgo is not scared to face deep issues, so tackle any problems and bring them to an end.

This Full Moon brings light to whatever was hidden in the darkness or buried within the subconscious such as emotional pain or our deepest desires, but once awareness happens you are able to make realistic changes. Our emotional levels move like strong turbulent waves in the ocean during high tide for some during this Full Moon. Emotional reactions may be strong, energies may feel irritable or uptight. We are amidst great times of transformation which are heralding major new beginnings. Change isn't always easy or comfortable and it’s constant, so we must strive to keep our balance during these changing tides.

The world as it stands is challenged by many opposing forces now. We feel them both personally and collectively, pushing against our own will, raising difficult questions, triggering issues we would rather avoid. How we keep our own balance of light and dark and manage our own inner conflicts largely dictates how we manage outside ones. If we struggle with our own anger or hatred, telling ourselves we shouldn’t feel this way, we will struggle to respond effectively to the anger of others, allow yourself to feel angry or upset, but don't let it take over, keep a balance. If we fear our own power, preferring to see ourselves as victim rather than creator we may succumb to the power wielded by others, adopting their thoughts and priorities, behaviors and lifestyles without discerning the right path for us. If we refuse to acknowledge our own inner selfishness that demands its own way no matter what, we may project it onto the world around us, pointing the finger of judgement and even becoming a bully. Don't suppress your feelings, embrace your light and your dark sides as one cannot exist without the other. We need both. Let go of guilt and allow yourself to feel what you're feeling without self-judgement.

Let the energy of this Full Moon wash over you and cleanse your spirit, use it to heal you both emotionally and physically. Let the moonlight bathe and sooth you mind, body and soul. let the earth element of Virgo heal you. Stay away from self-doubt. Seek a balance of light and dark and see the truth in your life however much it may hurt, only then can you do something about it and begin to heal.

Have a blessed Full Moon, may the Goddess watch over you.
