When biomechanics were introduced, not only did it reduce the induction rate but also increased the amount of baby’s born before 41 weeks AND reduced the caesarean rate.

A back to back baby can contribute to a pregnancy being longer as well as a longer labour.

There are many things that could make it more likely for you to carry a baby in a back to back position such as office jobs, long commute to work, injuries that effect the way you walk, pelvic injuries, poor posture etc. It’s hard to know whether back to back baby’s have increased over time or if it is just something that we know more about. But what we do know is that they increase the chances of being offered intervention but, the position of baby is also something that we can influence too.

I’m all about giving you tools to stack the odds in your favour for birth to go your way. Biomechanics is one of these tools.

I would be doing you a disservice by not telling you about biomechanics, hypnobirthing and antenatal education. Because ignorance is not bliss when it comes to birth.

If you don’t know about biomechanics, how are you going to use the positions that one study shows make you 10x more likely to have a vaginal birth?

If you don’t know about hypnobirthing, how are you going to keep your body out of fight-or-flight and actually let labour progress? Women who use it are half as likely to want or choose pain relief in labour.

And if you haven’t done your antenatal education, how are you going to know your choices, what you can request or choose, how you can stack the odds for the birth you want. Studies show it significantly reduces birth-related PTSD symptoms as well as anxiety and PND.

Birth prep is the one thing you can do ahead of time that puts you in control of something inherently unpredictable.

I’ve put all of this into a birth prep course. Comment PREP if you want it. ⬇️

If you’re feeling like you cannot cope with this heat right now, don’t worry, I’ve got your (sweaty) back 😅☀️

Last week I asked you all how you were surviving pregnancy in the heat and honestly… you delivered with the tips 👏➡️

From ice lollies and cold flannels to paddling pools and fans on full blast, here are some hacks from fellow mums🧊🤰

A little reminder too, staying hydrated is SO important during hot weather. Keep sipping water throughout the day, stay in the shade where you can and don’t forget your sun cream ☀️ Your skin can be extra sensitive during pregnancy, so regular breaks from direct sunlight are a must.

Got any more tips to help other mums to be survive this heatwave? Drop them in the comments ⬇️💛

Don’t sit in one birth camp… all three make the perfect birth mix

⭐️ Hypnobirthing prepares your mind. It gives you a toolbox of techniques and coping strategies to help you through every stage of labour. When you understand what your body is doing you’re less likely to feel scared or out of control and that can be so powerful.

⭐️ Biomechanics prepares your body. These days we move less and sit more and that can have a big impact on your pelvis. Biomechanics helps release tension in the muscles and ligaments around your pelvis creating more space for baby. More space means baby can get into a better position which gives you a better chance of a smoother quicker labour.

⭐️ Antenatal education is going to give you the knowledge you need for birth. You will learn about all types of birth, your pain relief options and how to make the best decisions for you and baby during labour and birth.

Looking for a guide with all three in them to help you get fully prepared for birth? Comment PREP and I will send it to you 🩷

Let’s break down this birth story and take a look at how The Birth Chapter was able to help Rachel during her birth:

😮‍💨 She had a toolkit full of breathing techniques to use throughout labour
💭 Ahead of birth she was already in a positive birth mindset
🏡 She knew strategies to help in early labour whilst at home
☎️ Rachel knew when to call delivery suite
✅ She used EBRAN to make choices that were best for her and her baby
🧘‍♀️ She had techniques to keep calm throughout, even when things deviated from “the plan”
💊 She understood all her pain relief options

We aren’t being mean, it just usually means that it’s time for the transitions stage of labour and it won’t be long until baby is here 🙌

There comes a point in your labour when you feel like you can go no further. The famous ‘transition words’ that all labouring mums seem to say are:

💬 “I want to go home.”
📣 “I can’t do this!”
🗣 “I need an epidural.”

These words, paired with spontaneous urges to push at the peak of contractions, are just soooo Classic Transition 🤓

And although reading this now it may seem like it’s a daunting and overwhelming time, it’s actually a very exciting stage of your labour. The transition stage is when you’re fully dilated and it’s time (or very nearly time) to start pushing. The finale of your labour 🥳

Even as a mother of 4 and a midwife, when I was in labour with my fourth baby I heard myself saying “I can’t do this” as the overwhelm of transition crept up on me. But as I heard myself saying it, I knew it meant I was close to having my baby in my arms 🥰 And that was enough to spur me on 💪🏼

So, I hope when you get to the transition stage and start to doubt your ability to cope and saying those classic phrases, you remember this caption and know that it means you’re nearly there 🏁

Any guesses… 👀

I hear people describe the smell of their waters as chlorine, bleach, or something slightly sweet… but there’s one answer I hear far more than anything else 🙊

And yes, asking you to smell your pad is genuinely something your midwife might ask you to do 😂 It can actually help us work out whether your waters have broke.

A little FYI about waters breaking ⬇️
It’s not always the dramatic movie-style gush 🎬
Sometimes baby’s head sits acts almost like a plug, so the fluid leaks slowly or comes out in little drips instead. This is called hindwaters 💦

🚨 If you’re unsure whether your waters have gone, it’s always best to call your maternity triage team for advice.

Still getting ready for birth and don’t know where to start?
