I removed the facial steamer from my clinic. Here’s the science why.
As a nurse prescriber specialising in melanin-rich skin, I don’t do anything without the evidence and the evidence on heat-induced hyperpigmentation is something every skin professional AND patient needs to know.
A 2023 iScience study confirmed that heat exposure triggers melanin production at temperatures as low as 41°C. That’s facial steamer territory. For Fitzpatrick 4–6 skin types, this isn’t a minor risk it can cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that takes months or even years to resolve.
We’re supposed to be improving skin. Not creating problems that outlast the treatment.
Drop 🔥 if you still use a steamer | 💧 if you’ve already made the switch.
Save this if you or your patients have deeper skin tones. This is the content the industry isn’t teaching — yet.
