I wrote a post the other week about stress and how it doesn't just affect your mind, it affects your body too
Today im off to the dentist to check the fitting of a gum guard. Im having to have this because of chronic jaw clenching that has led to me loosing two teeth 😬
Many people think of stress as just feeling overwhelmed, but chronic stress can have real physical consequences
When we're under prolonged stress, our bodies stay in a constant state of tension. We may clench our jaw during the day or night or grind our teeth while we sleep without even realising it. Over time this can wear down teeth, crack fillings, and in severe cases even contribute to tooth loss, liked I've experienced
Our bodies are always communicating with us. Sometimes the aches, pains and physical symptoms we experience are signs of chronic stress
Looking after your wellbeing is an essential part of protecting your physical health aswell as our mental health.
When I become aware that I am clenching my jaw I now take a moment to wiggle it a little and practice breathing exercises. It helps me relax my body. I also sometimes practice muscle relaxation, where I tense and squeeze all my muscles intentionally for a few seconds and then release the tension. It helps
Take a moment today to check in with yourself. Unclench your jaw. Relax your shoulders. Take a few slow, deep breaths
Your body is listening to every thought, every emotion and every moment of stress. Treat it with the same kindness and compassion that you would offer someone you love ♥️
