Norway is protecting its children—and the rest of the world should be paying attention. 🇳🇴

After years of increasing digitalisation, Norway is choosing to pause.

Generative AI is now heavily restricted for primary-aged pupils.

National guidance has pushed smartphones and smartwatches out of schools.

Printed books are being brought back into classrooms.

And Norway’s education minister has called for screens to be reduced—or removed—from kindergartens, alongside a renewed commitment to reading aloud.

The research into Norwegian school smartphone bans is difficult to ignore:

📚 Improvements in students’ academic performance
📵 A reduction in physical and online bullying
🧠 A reduction of up to almost 60% in students seeking specialist psychological support

The effects varied between groups, and these findings pre-date Norway’s later national recommendations. But they offer powerful evidence of what may happen when children are protected from constant digital access.

Some are calling this a return to traditional education.

For children, I hope it means returning to what is real:

🌿 Real stories shared with an unhurried adult
🌿 Real conversations and friendships
🌿 Real materials they can touch and transform
🌿 Real experiences outdoors
🌿 Time to climb, build, wonder and discover

Norway’s early childhood framework continues to value play, movement, relationships, sensory exploration and connection with nature.

This isn’t simply a rejection of technology.

It is a recognition that while technology can have a place, it should never become dominant in early childhood.

IMPROVE HANDWRITING SPEED and CONTROL with Ebonite/Vulcanite Heavyweight Pens. Made from hardened, dense rubber with heavy metal components, these pens are heavier than standard pens and ideal for many people with poor pen control, proprioception difficulties, or a preference for a pen with more heft.
