The flip side is that people who grew up feeling unseen often struggle to receive the very love they’re longing for. Genuine care can feel unfamiliar, even unsafe. They may overgive because that’s what love has always meant to them. When someone has healthy boundaries, prioritizes themselves, or gives in a balanced way, it can be mistaken for selfishness or a lack of love. Over time, this can breed resentment because they’re giving what they secretly hope someone else will give back, while finding it difficult to truly receive. Awareness of how your past has shaped you is only the first step. Healing is recognizing that the stories you’ve carried about yourself aren’t necessarily the truth, but what we attached to those experiences. It’s questioning the beliefs formed in survival and taking responsibility for the choices made from those beliefs. It’s not becoming someone new, but feeling safe enough to stop living from old survival patterns and start living from who you really are.
