โš ๏ธ Safety warning for parents and carers

Seen those โ€œsquishyโ€ toys all over social media? If your children or young people have been asking for them, itโ€™s worth being aware of some safety concerns.

These soft, food-shaped toys (like donuts or dumplings) are really popular right now โ€“ but Trading Standards teams across the UK have found that some donโ€™t meet basic safety requirements.

โ—Reported issues include:
โ€ข Strong chemical smells
โ€ข Missing safety labels or supplier details
โ€ข Skin irritation or nausea
โ€ข Choking risks if damaged
โ€ข Burns if heated

Some cheaper or imitation versions โ€“ especially those bought online โ€“ may be higher risk.

โœ… Top tips when buying:
โ€ข Look for a UKCA or CE mark
โ€ข Check for clear supplier details (ideally a UK address)
โ€ข Be cautious of very cheap items or anything with a strong smell

Keeping an eye out for these signs can help you choose safer products for children.

If youโ€™re concerned about a product, you can report it to the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133

Warwickshire Local Area SEND Partnership has welcomed the publication of its latest Ofsted and Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection of services for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

In its first inspection under the new national framework, which introduces three possible outcomes rather than a single overall rating, Warwickshire was assessed as meeting the โ€˜middleโ€™ outcome, representing an improvement on the previous inspection.

This Learning Disability Week, weโ€™re highlighting some of the resources and events available in Warwickshire libraries to support SEND families.

Did you know?

When visiting any Warwickshire library, you can ask to borrow a sensory bucket.

These buckets help provide an entertaining and calming experience for anyone with sensory needs, with items that stimulate four of the senses - touch, smell, hearing and sight. Simply ask a member of staff and you can use a bucket for the duration of your visit.

Libraries are also offering a range of sensory-friendly sessions and activities, including:

Does your child or young person have a health passport? ๐Ÿ“‹

Does your child or young person have a health passport? ๐Ÿ“‹

Does your child or young person have a health passport? ๐Ÿ“‹

A health passport is a document that helps healthcare professionals understand your child better. It can include information about:

๐Ÿ’šHow they communicate
๐Ÿ’šWhat helps them feel safe
๐Ÿ’š Sensory needs and triggers
๐Ÿ’š Medical conditions and medications
๐Ÿ’š Things they may find difficult
๐Ÿ’š How they express pain or distress

For many families, a health passport can also reduce the need to repeatedly explain their child's needs to different healthcare professionals. Instead of having the same conversations over and over again, important information is available in one place for staff to refer to.

Sharing a health passport before a hospital appointment, admission or emergency visit can help staff provide more personalised care and reduce stress for both your child and your family.

Many NHS trusts provide their own templates, often called a health passport, hospital passport, learning disability passport or communication passport.

If your child/young person doesn't already have one, try searching your local NHS trust's website or asking your GP surgery, learning disability nursing team, paediatrician or hospital for a template.

๐Ÿ’ก Keep a digital copy on your phone so it's always available if you need unexpected medical care.

Has a health passport helped your family? We'd love to hear your experiences in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡

Here's a good template from the NHS website: https://f.mtr.cool/sbjatbpesx
