Linda Verjus Nutritional Therapist Application of functional medicine model to support health and wellbeing

If you have an autoimmune disease, HOW you lose weight may be just as important as HOW MUCH you lose.

For many people, weight loss can improve inflammation, metabolic health, and overall well-being. But if your body is already living with chronic immune dysregulation, rapid weight loss without adequate nutrition can create new challenges.

Losing muscle, eating too little protein, becoming deficient in key nutrients, or under-fueling your body can contribute to fatigue, slower recovery, poorer immune function, and reduced resilience. Instead of feeling stronger, you may find yourself with less energy, more inflammation, and fewer resources for your body to heal.

This is why I encourage clients to think beyond the scale, especially if they're taking semaglutide, tirzepatide, or another GLP-1 medication.

Weight loss should support your health, not compete with it.

From a functional medicine perspective, the goal is to lower inflammation while protecting the systems that matter most: muscle mass, gut health, nutrient status, mitochondrial function, and immune regulation. When those foundations are supported, weight loss becomes part of the healing process rather than another source of stress on the body.

If you have an autoimmune disease, don't chase weight loss alone.

Chase strength. Nourishment. Resilience. Healing.

The scale isn't the only thing worth measuring.

Losing weight can be an incredible step toward better health, but from a functional medicine perspective, *how* you lose weight matters just as much as *how much* you lose.

If you're taking semaglutide, tirzepatide, or another GLP-1 medication, ask yourself:

☑️ Am I eating enough protein to preserve muscle?
☑️ Am I getting quality sleep?
☑️ Do I have enough energy to get through the day?
☑️ Am I strength training regularly?
☑️ Am I staying hydrated and replacing electrolytes?
☑️ Am I supporting my gut and digestion?
☑️ Am I nourishing my body with vitamins and minerals?
☑️ Is my inflammation improving, not just my weight?

Rapid weight loss without the right nutritional support can contribute to fatigue, muscle loss, poor recovery, digestive issues, and nutrient deficiencies.

My goal isn't simply to help you lose weight. It's to help you become healthier, stronger, and more resilient along the way.

Lasting health is about far more than a lower number on the scale.

When it comes to supporting the immune system, it's easy to focus on supplements, protocols, and the latest health trends.

But sometimes the most powerful habits are also the simplest.

If you've been following along with our recent discussion on mould, mycotoxins, and autoimmune disease, you know that healing isn't just about identifying potential triggers; it's also about supporting the body that's carrying the burden.

That's where small daily habits can make a big difference.

☀️ Step outside for sunlight
💧 Drink water before coffee
🍳 Eat protein within an hour of waking
🧘 Take 3 deep breaths before checking your phone
🚶 Move your body for 5 minutes

These habits help support healthy immune function, blood sugar balance, nervous system regulation, and overall resilience. They won't eliminate every trigger, but they can help create a stronger foundation for healing.

Sometimes the goal isn't doing more. It's consistently doing the basics well.

Which one of these habits could you start tomorrow morning?

If you suspect mould or mycotoxins may be affecting your health, don't start with panic… start with curiosity.

This week, challenge yourself to look for clues:
🔍 When did your symptoms begin?
🔍 Have you experienced water damage at home or work?
🔍 Do your symptoms improve when you're away from certain environments?
🔍 Are you noticing patterns in your energy, sleep, brain fog, headaches, or inflammation?

Many people spend years searching for answers without ever looking at the role their environment may be playing.

The goal isn't to self-diagnose. The goal is to gather information.

At the same time, focus on supporting the foundations of health: prioritise sleep, eat nutrient-dense foods, stay hydrated, get outside, and move your body in ways that feel supportive rather than depleting.

Functional medicine is often about connecting dots that may seem unrelated. Sometimes the smallest clue can lead to a much bigger answer.

Is it life... or is it something else?

When symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, headaches, joint pain, or digestive issues show up, it’s easy to assume they’re just part of being busy, getting older, or dealing with stress.

And sometimes they are.

But sometimes those symptoms are clues.

At our practice, we often encourage patients to look beyond the obvious and ask deeper questions. How are you sleeping? How is your gut health? Have you experienced significant stress? Could there be an underlying infection? What about your environment?

Mould and mycotoxins aren’t the answer for everyone, but they may be one piece of the puzzle that often goes overlooked. That’s why functional medicine focuses on understanding the whole picture rather than simply managing symptoms.

Your symptoms aren’t random. They’re information.

What if some of your symptoms were being caused by the world's worst flatmate?

The kind that never pays rent, steals your energy, keeps you up at night, and creates problems you can't quite put your finger on.

For some people, mycotoxins (toxic compounds produced by certain moulds) may contribute to symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, digestive issues, and chronic inflammation.

The tricky part? They're often invisible.

That's why functional medicine looks beyond symptoms and asks deeper questions about the environments we live in and the factors that may be influencing our health.

Mould myths are everywhere… and some of them can keep us from seeing the bigger picture.

The truth? Mould isn’t always visible, it doesn’t affect everyone the same way, and it can impact more than just allergies.

For some people, especially those navigating autoimmune symptoms, hidden mould exposure may be worth paying attention to.

Curious to learn more? I break it down in the BLOG.

And if you think mould could be playing a role in your autoimmune symptoms, you’re welcome to schedule an appointment with me so we can explore it together.

Your gut does so much more than digestion!

It also helps regulate the immune system and acts as a protective barrier for the body. That’s why mould exposure can sometimes affect more than people expect.

When the gut barrier is under stress, the immune system can become more activated, inflammation can rise, and the cycle may continue.

Over time, that ongoing immune activation may also play a role in autoimmunity for some people, especially when the body is already vulnerable to inflammation or immune dysregulation.

Mould exposure is an often-overlooked piece of the autoimmunity conversation… learn more about how I respond to mould exposure with my patients in my BLOG!

Sometimes it doesn’t feel like one big symptom.

It feels like reacting to everything:
• foods you’ve always tolerated
• stress
• fragrances
• poor sleep
• certain spaces

When the immune system loses balance, everyday triggers can feel much harder to handle.

For some people, MOULD may be one piece of the puzzle.

Make sure to check out my BLOG if you want to learn my approach to mould exposure… and stay tuned! More to come!
