Caring for elderly parents often starts with small changes that are easy to miss.

It might be a decline in confidence, difficulty managing day-to-day tasks, or a moment that makes you realise things aren’t quite the same as they used to be.

These conversations can feel difficult to start, especially when roles within a family begin to shift.

Our latest guide looks at the first steps, including how to approach conversations, involve your parents, and think realistically about the support that might be needed.

It also explores the importance of taking things step by step, and not feeling like you have to make all the decisions at once.

Read our guide to caring for elderly parents below.

Caring for elderly parents can be a complex and emotional journey, but with the right guidance, it can also be rewarding. In this comprehensive guide, we cover everything you need to know about caring for elderly parents, from legal and financial considerations to managing their health and wellbeing...

“We had to decide in 24 hours.”

This is more common than most people realise.

Care decisions are often not made after long planning. They happen in moments of urgency. After a hospital stay. After a fall. After a sudden change in health.

In those situations, families are trying to think clearly while also dealing with worry and pressure 🏥

It can feel like there is no time to pause and consider all the options properly.

That is why understanding care in advance can make such a difference.

You can find out the types of care we offer on the 'What We Do' page on our website.

It is easy to look at live-in care and think it is more expensive.

But what it includes is very different.

It is not just about hours or rates. It is about having one consistent Care Professional, someone who understands the person, their routines, and what matters to them, with support available throughout the day in the place they know best 🏡

When families look back, the conversation is rarely just about cost.

Most people only start thinking about care when they really need it.

But by that point, decisions often feel rushed and overwhelming.

Planning ahead can make a big difference.

It gives you more time to understand your options, more choice in the type of support available, and often a more gradual, less stressful journey 💚

Even small steps early on can help, like starting with companionship or light support at home.

Finding work that fits around family life isn’t always easy, but for Anila, Home Instead Watford has given her the flexibility to do both 💚

With over 12 years of experience in care and two children at home, Anila needed a role that worked around her family as well as her career. Since joining the team in 2022, she’s been able to shape her hours around family life, more recently choosing weekend shifts so she can be more present during the week.

For Anila, it’s not just about flexible hours. It’s about the relationships she builds with her clients. Seeing the same people regularly means she has time to get to know them, build trust, and make a real difference to their day.

This month we had the privilege of delivering our Spot the Signs Dementia Workshop in collaboration with the Resourceful Women's Network: The New Working Name of Harrow Women’s Centre.

We explored the medical background of dementia and Alzheimer’s, and discussed how families can be supported when someone is living with these conditions at home.

What really stood out was the openness in the room, with many people sharing personal experiences of loved ones and reflecting on how important early understanding and support can be.

A huge thank you to the Resourceful Women’s Network for hosting us and creating such a welcoming and supportive space for these conversations. 💚

If you’d like to find out more about dementia support or how we can help locally, please contact our Watford team on 01923 250 513.

Is live-in care worth it?

It is a question a lot of families ask early on.

Usually what they are really trying to work out is simple. Will this actually make life better for the person I care about, and for the family around them?

Because cost is only part of the picture.

If you are starting to ask these questions, you are in the right place to start exploring the answers too 💚

If you would like to understand what live-in care really involves day to day, watch our short video.

This month, Stephanie and Shade attended the OPALS (Older Persons Activity, Learning and Safety) event.

It was a really positive opportunity to meet local organisations, professionals and members of the community who are all working towards the same goal: helping older people stay safe, active and connected.

We had lots of great conversations with people who stopped by to learn more about companionship, home care and community support available in Watford and the surrounding areas.

A big thank you to the organisers for hosting such a welcoming and well-run event.
