With over 600 muscles in the human body, itβs important to understand that our muscles are the driving force behind every day movement!!!
As we age and become more βsedentaryβ some of these muscles become under loaded and overtime start to deteriorate also called atrophy.
Itβs this atrophy or deterioration overtime that leads instability, muscle weakness and puts you at a higher risk of injury and risk of falls.
The image below is an MRI of the cross section of the legs taken from two 70year old men;
The image in the right shows the integrity of the muscle after leading an βactiveβ lifestyle. You can see how much muscle mass and support his joint has.
The image in the left shows how much atrophy or muscle wastage which is a byproduct of his sedentary lifestyle, you can see the lack of support around his joint which is now more prone to injury through instability!!
Including (and maintaining) some form of resistance training into your routine can help to not only slow this process down but also βπΌππΌβππΌ it!!! π€―
That doesnβt mean you need to spend hours in the gym under a barbell if this is not your bag, exercise therapy, brisk walks, swimming, running, cycling, hiit style training are also good examplesβ¦
If however you have or are currently dealing with pain that is restricting your ability to perform daily activities or exercise please get in touch today to see how we can help!
Much Love here π
