'To act more effectively and make a greater impact, we need to tend to ourselves- you can't give if you're depleted'

M

any of us know this but have trouble implementing it. We end up worn out- tired, irritable, anxious or worse, burnt out. The classes address this, tipping the balance back in your favour, to support you and encourage self-care and understanding, so that you can leave replenished and grounded, ready to act on what your heart is calling you to do. In these mindfully-conducted classes, breathwork, movement and stillness are used to encourage and enhance inner reflection, exploration and self awareness so that the response can be the most effective- easing and healing the body, calming the mind and soothing the soul. Sessions are Bridport-based, beginners welcome in all classes.

A few weeks ago my car broke down.

I needed to get to my beach yoga class (and it wasn’t the one I often cycle to).

So I did something that doesn't come particularly naturally to me.

I stuck out my thumb and asked a stranger for a lift. (And felt a little unsettled when he started rearranging the bootšŸ«£ā€¦).

Then, this week, cycling to another class, my saddle became loose and started trying to slide me off the seat. I just needed a spanner (like the one I’d left in the garage).

A workman happened to be nearby, so I asked if I could borrow his. He very kindly stepped in and fixed it for me.

Two small things.

But both made me think about how much we value independence.

We're encouraged to be capable. To manage. To cope. To sort things out ourselves.

I remember when the boys were in a double pushchair and I was struggling up steps to the library… someone offered help but I instinctively replied, ā€˜I’m fine, thanks’… and then kicked myself as I kept struggling.

At least I’d shown I was capable…

And there is something wonderful about being capable.

But I’ve realised there’s another kind of strength in being willing to say:

I need some help.

Or just ā€˜yes please!’

I wonder how often we make life harder than it needs to be because we're afraid to ask.

Afraid of being a burden.

Afraid of being refused.

Afraid that needing someone somehow makes us less capable.

And yet both times, something lovely happened.

Someone helped.

There was a tiny moment of connection between strangers.

Perhaps we don't always need to be more self-sufficient.

Perhaps sometimes we need to be a little more willing to receive.

I'm noticing that one at the moment. 🌿

I've been thinking about the people who come to me for mentoring and yoga…

There’s often plenty of common ground.

They’re usually carrying a lot.

They might be at a crossroads — something about their life no longer quite fits, but they're not sure what should come next.

Sometimes they're navigating a major change.

Mostly, they’ve been looking after everyone else.

Sometimes they're wondering whether there's another way of working.

Sometimes they're self-employed already and trying to create a business that fits their actual life, rather than taking over all of it.

Or the landscape they started in has changed somehow and they’re needing to adapt.

And often, they're not really looking for someone to tell them what to do.

What they need most is space…

Space to slow down.

To be heard.

To turn down the noise.

To work out what matters now.

They don’t need answers from me. I might guide a bit, ask a few questions, get them to explore, but my role isn’t to give them the answers.

We often know more than we think we do.

The yoga practice and mentoring provide space to help you find yours — and then work out what a sustainable next step might look like.

That's why I love mentoring, and yoga.

There is something very powerful about watching someone reconnect with their true self. It’s transformative.

If any of this resonates, you're welcome to message me. šŸ¤

I've been thinking a lot about how often we approach ourselves as a problem to be solved.

We're tired, so we need to become better at managing our time.

We're overwhelmed, so we need a better system.

We've lost our sense of direction, so we need to work out the right answer.

We're struggling, so we need to fix ourselves.

None of us are really broken.

I think we all have a sense of what we need… it’s just sometimes too noisy to hear it.

I don't see my role as a teacher or mentor as telling people what to do.

I much prefer creating the conditions where someone can slow down, feel heard without judgement, notice what's really going on and begin to hear themselves again.

Yoga is great for facilitating this.

So is a good conversation.

Being outside and being reminded that we're part of something bigger than just our own busy minds can help too.

However we do it, sometimes we simply need to stop for long enough to ask:

What do I actually need?

That's at the heart of how I work.

Not adding more noise.

Creating space to hear yourself think.

What if the answer to overwhelm isn't another thing to do?

Sometimes we just need to pause.

To breathe.

To create a little space.

This is exactly why I created my free Instant Calm Guide — simple practices to help you create a little space and move from overwhelm towards peace.

You can get your free guide here: https://welcome.leahmiles.co.uk/instantcalmguide

And if you know someone who could use a little more space at the moment, feel free to share this with them.

Hi, I’m Leah,

If you’ve been around here for a while, you’ll probably know me through yoga — especially Beach Yoga, seasonal events and beach cleaning, which have been passions of mine for many years now. I’m very grateful I found a way to turn my passions into my work and life.

But yoga is only one part of what I do.

I’m a yoga teacher and yoga therapist, wellbeing mentor and business mentor, and increasingly I’m bringing these different strands of my work together.

Whether I’m teaching yoga on the beach, mentoring someone through a period of change, supporting someone in finding their feet in self-employment, or working with organisations around wellbeing, I’ve realised there’s a thread that runs throughout:

I create calm, supportive spaces where people can slow down, reconnect with themselves, think clearly and find their own way forward.

I’m particularly interested in the profound shifts that happen when we let go of some of the stories, expectations and pressures that no longer fit — and start creating a life (and work) that feels more authentic, sustainable and fulfilling.

Nature is a big part of that for me too: the sea, seasons, slowing down, noticing, moving, breathing, connecting and remembering that we’re part of something bigger.

So while you’ll still find plenty of Beach Yoga here, you’ll be seeing a little more about mentoring, wellbeing, nature, life transitions and creating a life that fits too.

It feels like the different aspects of my work that light me up are finally beginning to make sense as one thing, and I’m bringing yet more of the work that lights me up into the mix… I’m really enjoying discovering what that thing is. 🌿🌊

If you’re new here, thanks for finding me, and if you’ve been here for a while, thank you for being part of the journey. I’m very excited to watch this next stage unfurl and share it with you… šŸ’›

I’ve been reflecting on the importance of creating space, and with some space I created for myself, wrote a blog post… have a read- I’d love to know if it resonates and how you’re creating space in your life (or if you need more of it?) ✨

I’ve been remembering just how nourishing space is recently. Taking little moments to eat my breakfast in the garden, not turning my phone on first thing (as someone who’s guilty of often ticking a few online work jobs off the list before even getting out of bed in the morning, this is a big thi...

I hitchhiked here today… the car wouldn’t start and I exhausted the options of cycling/ calling people/ catching a bus… so I got on the road, stuck out my thumb and hoped for a bite. A stranger named Patrick saved the day (šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™šŸ™) which meant I was only a bit late and thankfully my class had all waited for me… after a bit of grounding (I probably needed it more than they did tbh) we had a pretty sweet session if I do say so myself with a focus on backs and shoulders (as most of us hold so much tension there!). And then a beautiful swim in sea that is so crystal clear at the moment ✨.

It’s easy to get caught up in frustration when things don’t go to plan (I did have a brief ā€˜why is this happening?!’ moment when the car kept chugging without catching) but sometimes a bit of trust and determination pays off… and if I say I’m doing a class, it takes a lot for me to not be there!

It’s moments like these where a yoga practice comes into it’s own… helping us to come back to ourselves and a state of presence when life events throw us a curve ball… I’m forever grateful for mine and today was a reminder of its potency ✨

Thanks again to Patrick for being so kind, and the rest of the group for waiting… we had people all the way from Colorado with us today who booked months ago so I was especially thankful not to let anyone down.. and the wait meant even more rubbish was collected in the pre- class clean! šŸ™ā˜€ļøāœØSo it all worked out well in the end.. phew.
