The festive season often brings celebrations, indulgent food, and a few more glasses of alcohol than usual 🎄🥂
But it’s also a good time to pause and reflect on how alcohol affects our bodies as we get older.

During perimenopause and menopause, hormonal changes alter the way alcohol is processed. As women, we naturally metabolise alcohol more slowly than men, meaning more of it stays in the bloodstream for longer. This is why alcohol can start to feel “different” in midlife.

Alcohol is a toxin and, for some women, it can worsen symptoms such as hot flushes, mood changes, anxiety, and poor sleep. It can also disrupt sleep quality and contribute to dehydration — which is why hangovers often feel far worse as we age.

This doesn’t mean you need to avoid alcohol altogether. Being more mindful can help: lighter drinks, lower-alcohol options, or soda or tonic with citrus and just a splash of spirit can make a big difference.

Enjoy the season, listen to your body, and focus on small choices that support your health and wellbeing ✨

Feeling Like You’re Losing the Plot?

Yesterday you did what? Today you need to do what? And tomorrow… well, that just feels too far ahead to even think about!
Some days, it can feel like your mind is foggy, your focus is gone, and you’re constantly second-guessing yourself. The more you worry about it, the worse the confusion and distress seem to get.

Your partner might shrug it off as “women’s problems”, your children might laugh, and your friends nod knowingly — they’ve felt it too.

But should you just ignore it?
Or is it time to look a little deeper and find a way to manage what’s really going on?

The truth is, there are valid reasons why you’re feeling like this — and one of the most common is a hormonal imbalance linked to perimenopause or menopause.

Emerging research is helping us understand what’s really happening inside our bodies during this stage of life. In particular, it’s showing how the central nervous system is influenced by changing levels of progesterone and estrogen.

While these hormones are often thought of as being purely related to reproduction, science now shows they have far-reaching effects — impacting cognition, mood, inflammation, mitochondrial function, and even neurogenesis (the growth of new brain cells).

So if you’ve been feeling “not quite yourself,” it’s not in your head — it’s in your hormones. And understanding that is the first step toward feeling like you again.
