This week (well, 2 weeks ago actually) we sang Wax and Wane by Penny Stone

A three part round that can get chaotic very quickly if you let it... and this group absolutely tried to speed up at every opportunity! I had to keep a firm hand ✋🏼

It felt like the right song for a last session though. However things change, there’s always a connective thread between women who have spent time together.

The women who came before you, will always be beside you. And the women who dance beside you, will pass the flame along 🧡

It’s been over a week since my final session with Singing Mamas Shoreham, and I still don’t quite have the words.

So many people showed up! Past members, current members, people who have become some of my closest friends. They surprised me with cakes, cheese and crackers and a collection, and I just about managed to hold it together on the day. It was the USB stick full of video messages that broke me, a week later, at my mum’s in Dorset 🥹

I started this group when my son was 18 months old because I needed it. I had no idea it would give me so much back. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of something really special 🧡

I’ve been putting off writing this one for a while.

This week is the last session of term for our Singing Mamas, and after that I’ll be handing the group over to the lovely Mags. Honestly, it feels like a much bigger deal than I expected!

The seed of Singing Mamas Shoreham began whilst I was going to a different Singing Mamas group on my first mat leave and loved it. I had to go back to work on the same day that group ran… So I started my own!

That was three years ago, when my son was 18 months old. The same age my daughter is now 🧡 they have both got so much from attending the group with me too 🌱

Running this group has been so much more than just a job. It’s been the community that got me through early parenthood. The room I could walk into every week and feel held, even when I was the one holding the space.

Mags is going to be brilliant and I genuinely couldn’t be leaving it in better hands 🙌🏼

But I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t bittersweet.

I’ll be starting fresh in Cornwall later this year and I can’t wait to see new groups grow there. But this group, and the people in it, will always mean a lot to me 🧡

Singing Mamas is coming to Falmouth! 🌊

We’re moving back to Cornwall later this summer and I can’t wait to get a group started in or near Falmouth this autumn.

The family centre we usually use was too hot today and wouldn’t let us into the garden, so we decamped to somewhere even better ✨

This is Apron Community Garden, run by the lovely Lis, and it was the perfect spot for a summer session. Blankets down, children running free, and singing in the shade 🙌🏼

Mags - Singing Mamas in Portslade & Shoreham led today too, which felt really lovely. She’ll be officially taking the group on at the end of the summer and I think you’re all in for a treat 🧡

If you haven’t come across Apron before, go and check them out. They run loads of things through the week, including art and craft and nature school on Monday and Friday mornings 🌿

Deep Into the Earth, by Tarisha Seligman.

A song I’ve sung before with birthing mothers in mind. This week, I taught it at the end of my doula training, surrounded by women learning to hold space for birth the way I’ve learnt to hold space in song.

Helping women feel steady, held, rooted, especially when it matters most. That’s the thread running through Singing Mamas, doula work, all of it.

I sang with the for Steyning Festival this weekend, then stayed for the folk session afterwards.

At one point my husband launched enthusiastically into a wonderfully random song about a pigeon…

…which caught the attention of some familiar faces nearby 👀

We got chatting and discovered The Unthanks were also singing the very same song as the finale of their evening gig (which was excellent) 😂

Did you know they run residential singing weekends? I will definitely be booking onto one at some point 🗓️

The pigeon song was The King of Rome by June Tabor. And both versions sounded wonderful 🎶🐦

Last minute dog walk song practice for tomorrow 🌞

This one was written by my dear friend Lotte, , who is part of a group of women I need very much.

For the women who pick us up, hold us steady, make us laugh, let us cry, and somehow stay with us even when we’re not in the same room (or county 🥺).

Very grateful for those women in my life 💛
