Male deer, which shed their antlers every year, begin to regrow them in July, hence the Native American name for July's full moon. Some refer to this moon as the thunder moon, due to the summer storms in this month. Other names include the hay moon, after the July hay harvest.
As the summer sun lingers in the sky and the earth hums with life, the Buck Moon rises—bold, steady, and full of promise. Just as antlers grow stronger and more defined each day, this moon reflects themes of maturation, personal power, and stepping into one’s full potential. It’s a time to reflect on how we’ve grown, what strength we’re developing, and where we’re headed.
Whether you honour every full moon or simply feel drawn to this one, the Buck Moon offers a space to reconnect with your strength, purpose, and path.
🦌 Antler Meditation: Claiming Your Growth - Craft or place symbolic antlers (real, wooden, or twig-formed) on your altar. Hold them in meditation and envision your own personal “antlers”—your wisdom, strength, and intentions—stretching outward. State in your mind or out loud “Like the stag, I grow into my truth. I rise with strength, crowned by experience.” Bless the antlers with oil or moon water and leave them under the moonlight overnight.
🌲 Forest Meditation: Root into Resilience - Find a quiet wooded area or sit beneath a tree. With your back resting against the trunk, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Ask yourself:
- What am I growing right now?
- What support do I need to keep going?
- What can I release to lighten my path?
Feel the grounding energy of the earth rise up to meet you, lending its strength.
🌾 Harvest Reflection - Even if you aren’t tending crops, your life is always growing something. Use this moon to consider:
- What am I planting now that I hope to harvest later?
- Are my efforts aligned with my purpose?
- How can I prepare for the inward turn of the year?
This is a time for setting sustainable rhythms, both practically and spiritually.
🛁 Moon Bath or Forest Walk - If conditions allow, draw a ritual bath under the full moon or take a slow, sacred walk.
Moon Bath: Add mugwort, lavender, and sea salt. Imagine the moonlight washing over you, clearing stagnant energy.
Forest Walk: Move in silence. Listen for the messages of deer, owl, or thunder. Collect small items (a leaf, a stone, a feather) as tokens of guidance.
