There is plenty of evidence to show that CPR skills fade within 3-6 months. Our huge experience shows that is also the case with people learning breakaway techniques and to a lesser extent moving and handling as with the latter group people trained tend to be applying the principles, if not a specific technique more regularly.
That is why all the trainers we train for both topics have access to video libraries of both how to apply in this case the Aikido based breakaway techniques and twenty four film clips showing a wide range of either pre hospital, or health and social care moving and handling techniques.

As the two lecturers from the Robert Gordon University Aberdeen testify they are of great value.

In Scottish Universities each year we train large numbers of student paramedics from Glasgow Caledonian and Stirling Universities , or as with Robert Gordon University , University of West Scotland and Queen Margaret University we train the lecturers to cascade the training to their students. Thereby ensuring students are equipped with the skills to keep them safe when on placements.

At Solutions we train staff from a wide range of backgrounds including nurse lecturers in specialist subjects such as moving and handling patients who fall within a hospital setting with suspected spinal injuries and conflict resolution including breakaway techniques particularly for those working in the community where people may take hold of them.

Despite conducting good risk assessments sometimes these situations occur.

To not make a bad situation worse we train the nurse lecturers to in turn train their student nurses in how to apply non pain compliant breakaway techniques based on the martial art of Aikido.

This approach being quite different from many martial arts because it places strong emphasis on harmony, control and avoiding unnecessary harm rather than defeating an opponent through aggression thus aiming to reconcile conflict rather than escalating.

The group shown in the photo are from the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen attending their annual update/ assessment day. Post training, they have access to a film library of the techniques to assist in the delivery to some 500 students each year.

We are both delighted and proud to have several Scottish Universities as our customers for several years which speaks for itself.

In 2004 whilst delivering a moving and handling training course to the Northern Ireland Ambulance service the question of taking people downstairs who couldn’t use a chair and carrying a person across rough ground who couldn’t lay flat was discussed.
The conventional carry sheet was not suitable as the person would be at risk of falling out. “ Why doesn’t someone make a carry sheet with a footpocket that would address this issue? “ was asked by a member of the training team.
✅ So we did!

An instant success and now available in standard and bariatric size with a tested weight capability of 333kgs.
This can be used to transport people in a semi recumbent position and crews can also place scoop stretchers inside to improve postures and thereby reduce risk of injury.

In the past few weeks a total of 97 have been shipped to Yorkshire and West Midlands Ambulance trusts, ERS Medical Services and Devon Air Ambulance.

✅Realistic scenarios, real emotions, real learning.

Be it mental health first aid, conflict resolution or moving and handling training the participation of a trained actor hugely enhances the learning experience.

A key player for this is Emily Laurence a highly skilled and versatile trained actor shown in the picture. She was playing a convincing role of a person with challenging behaviour who participants on our Level 3 accredited moving and handling train the trainer course had to risk assess to determine if safe to move her or not.

🚑 NHS Patient Transport Service Managers from Cheshire and “Yam Yam” areas having just completed the OFQUAL endorsed Level 3 four day Moving and handling for trainers and risk assessor course hosted once again by West Midlands Ambulance Trust.

🔊 This course now equips them with not only how to apply the safe moving and handling techniques and how to conduct risk assessments but how to effectively instruct others using our unique “Eight steps for effective instruction” One commented “ I was very nervous about delivering training and doing so much in four days but am now confident to do so and am starting a new journey by providing training.

✅ The materials I have been given are amazing and give me confidence as they include a video library of techniques to refer to plus presentation materials with audio and much more.

👩‍🦽 Staff who transport children to and from schools with special educational needs play an important role in the overall care and wellbeing during transport and have huge responsibilities to ensure their safety.

😊 We at Solutions have had the privilege of working with these dedicated people for over thirty years training them in a range of skills including, disability awareness, moving and handling, emergency first aid, managing challenging behaviour and in recent years training them in the use of “Rescue medication” for children suffering tonic clonic epileptic seizures.

📌 After their initial training staff working for Achieving for Children in South London attend an annual skills MOT for just one hr when they demonstrate on manikins the protocol for the safe administration of the medication on pre filled syringes called “Buccal Midazolam” and complete a short answer paper to evidence their theoretical skills are maintained.

The picture shows two staff from AFC practising the administration with syringes filled with water.

📆 The month of April is stress awareness driven by the H.S.E. Evidence shows that the causes of stress are due to demands, control, support, relationships, role, and change.

🔊 It is estimated that about 61% of adults with a mental health issue do not seek assistance.

👍 This is where having mental health first aiders in the workplace can help as they can either spot a potential issue or if the right person is selected ( usually a trusted colleague) the necessary guidance and support can be given.

✅ Our experience in this is huge as our trainers all of whom are former practising paramedic managers now also many years of managing staff in the commercial sector have supported staff at such times.

We offer a unique accredited two day course that includes attendees applying our six step approach using a professional actor. We have testimonials to support the value of this course.

✅ Avoid having to use a highly trained member of staff to teach all the theory of moving and handling including the law, spinal mechanics, back care, communication and co-operation, dynamic manual handling risk assessment and the principles of safer handling.

💻 This can be done by your staff completing our online People Moving People course a highly interactive and comprehensive programme to achieve the objectives and to be done at a time, place, and pace to suit.

☠️This is NOT dull “Death by PowerPoint” but educationally rigorous all for just £16.95.
