Therapeutic Space with Ash

Therapeutic Space with Ash By providing a child with a 'therapeutic space', we are able to unlock their full potential! I started my journey working in a college in Paris, France.

Welcome to Therapeutic Space!

I have been working therapeutically with children for over 14 years. I was there to support students with their English skills but was quickly given the role of supporting them with their emotional well-being, relationships and social issues.

I returned to the UK where I gained a Masters in Social Work. From the outset, my priority has always been working with ch

ildren therapeutically to support them through some of the most complex and challenging times in their lives. A specialist focus of mine has been working with children whose first language is not English; utilising my French skills whenever possible. This has led to me undertaking research and gaining a significant amount of experience of working with children and families within the asylum seeking and refugee communities.

I have worked alongside Children’s Psychologists and psychotherapists to provide children and families with the bespoke psychoeducation and therapeutic support they require. In order to deepen my therapeutic knowledge, in 2021, I began my journey into the world of Play Therapy with PTUK and APAC via Leeds Beckett and Chichester Universities. I feel that children need a safe ‘Therapeutic Space’ to be able to feel accepted, heard and understood. With this as their base, it allows them opportunity to explore their experiences and support them on their journey of emotional healing.

During my 14 years working with children, I have worked with children who have experienced a significant amount of complex trauma, bereavement, loss, parents in prison, anger, anxiety, children in care, refugee and asylum seeking children and children diagnosed with ASD and ADHD.

Everyday, I am grateful to be able to do the job that I do. I feel it is an honour and a privilege to be a part of a child's therapeutic journey.

Our Inner Spark Holiday Programme enjoyed the beautiful outdoors this May half-term.

We painted plant pots, then planted wildflowers and sunflowers so we can watch them grow.

We had opportunity to blow bubbles, to run around, to play Dodge Ball and to get creative outside.

Starting planning for the summer programmes now and we can’t wait!!!

A Huge thank you to the for supporting this programme!

Ever feel that you try your best but your child just won’t talk about their worries? Why won’t they tell you?

Sometimes it can one tough to even try and find the words to explain what’s going on for us and even more so for children.

They love dearly and sometimes don’t want to worry us. Or it can feel confusing in their mind. And when this happens, their nervous system goes into survival mode and means they can’t find the words.

But a short time of connection, consistently, takes pressure off. All the stress of our daily lives feels easier in that moment. And the co-regulation of both your nervous system in that moment, helps children to process their situation and try and find their words.

What are you doing this weekend to connect with your little ones?

Setting boundaries with your child doesn’t have to mean raised voices or empty threats.

‘I’m throwing every single one of those toys in the bin.’
- we’ve all said it!!

And the moment it came out you knew. You weren’t actually going to throw all the toys in the bin!

Here’s what that moment needs instead:
Calm voice. Soft eyes. Steady presence.

When you’re regulated, they feel the safety of the limit.
Not the threat of it.

Firm and kind aren’t opposites. We can be both 💛

We’ve been taught that boundaries mean consequences. They don’t. They mean clarity.
And clarity is one of the kindest things you can give a child.

Here’s what that actually looks like in real life.

Instead of :
“If you don’t stop that right now I’m throwing every single one of those toys in the bin.”
(We’ve all said it. No judgement 🤪)

But:
“I can see you’re really frustrated right now. And we’re not doing hurting your brother that way. Come here, let’s take a breath together.”

Same boundary.
Completely different nervous system.

When we set boundaries from a regulated place — calm voice, soft eyes, steady presence — our child’s nervous system takes its cue from ours. They feel the safety of the limit, not the threat of it.

The goal isn’t a child who complies because they’re scared.

It’s a child who trusts that you mean what you say
because you said it with love.

Firm and kind aren’t opposites.
We can be both.

How can trying something new help with your child’s self esteem?

This was something we tried over half-term. I’d thought it was like clip and climb. And when I realised we weren’t clipped on, the fear was real! But I was already committed with my son there waiting!! We had to do it.

And he was nervous too. New surroundings, noises, smells, people…plus the challenge of actually climbing. But he smashed it! And was super proud of himself when we came out.

Going to try a new challenge each month…what will yours be?

Unpopular opinion - giving children jobs. But why not when it boosts their self esteem and confidence?

Lately, the trend is to shield our children from hard work. But true confidence doesn’t come from constant praise. It comes from capability.

When we do everything for our children, we accidentally tell them, “I’m doing this because you can’t.”

By handing my children a list of jobs today, I’m saying: “I trust you. You are capable, and your contribution matters.”

Here is what a simple chore list actually builds:

💛 Self-Esteem: The pride of looking at a finished task and realising, “I did that.”

💛 Responsibility: Learning that a home takes teamwork to run.

💛Confidence: Mastering real-world skills that prepare them for the future.

They might grumble at first, but empowering them is always worth it. And the heavy lifting and focus on task kept all our nervous systems in sync, regulated and ready to chill in the garden!

Power Of Connection Workshop 💫 A therapeutic workshop for parents and their children to come together to explore neuroscience, connection, behaviours, feelings and most importantly, learning we are not alone 💛

It was an absolute privilege and a pleasure to facilitate another Power of Connection workshop

Thank you to all those parents and children who attended, for sharing the way you did and for exploring all that you did 💛

Some beautiful comments at the end…
💫 it’s been helpful to relate the theory to what’s happening at home
💫 the small group works well, it’s helped to open up and connect with others
💫 we have felt the same together during this process
💫 I’ve loved the balance and the time spent with my child
💫 I’ll be doing more of this at home now
💫 I’ve realised here, I’m not alone 💛
