Weekend of Wildlife 🌳🍃🐛🐞🌿

1. A mulberry tree - apparently the only one in the park with another seeding hiding in a bush close by.

2. Lime Tree - a beekeepers dream tree as the bees have an absolute feast on these. The parks pathway is lined with these which is handy as there is an apiary here. These don’t usually flower until much later in the year but they are showing up early this year.

3. Elderflower - smells like crap when you crush the leaves but tastes so good as a cordial and in gin!

4. Lichen - a symbiotic organism that lives on the edge of life and death but when it’s doing its thing can tell us so much about our surroundings.

5. Looking for Egret’s - sadly they were hiding!

6. Looking for dragon & damsel flies.

7. Buff tailed bumble bee - we learnt quite a bit about the many bee varieties & the difference between the bumble and honey bee 🐝

8. Blue tailed male teneral damsel fly - what a mouthful! - apparently his colour will show in a couple days and then his life will also be limited. We were lucky enough to have two bug specialists who previously worked at the Natural History Museum help us with identifying him. 🐛 🐜 🐞

9. Canada Goose & not the coat! 🪿

10. Ginkgo Biloba tree - the only deciduous conifer. A living fossil tree. The female trees are the ones that bare fruit. The fruits are toxic so if you see any don’t touch. People take supplements containing this but the process it goes through to be safe to consume is lengthy. 🌳

11. Ginkgo Biloba leaf - not your average leaf! 🍃

That’s one of the longest posts I’ve written in a while (possibly ever!). We had such a great time and it was FREE!
