Pip and I are delighted to be back teaching behavioural science to the first year dietetic students at Wi******er Uni 📚

We’ve had a fantastic start to the term - exploring the many psychosocial dimensions of health.

Our recent sessions have focused on the importance of intrinsic motivation in making and sustaining behaviour change. We’ve been exploring intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in the context of weight management approaches, and sharing some interesting insights and tensions like…

💭 To what extent does staying scale-focused foster self-criticism and fuel unhelpful behaviours such as emotional eating?

Some brilliant ideas were shared on how we can practically foster non-scale-based motivation to support sustained behaviour change and healthier relationships with food and body

Pip has shown some interest in the content covered and engages periodically during sessions. However, she can become easily distracted by her peers, which occasionally affects her focus. While she generally remains awake during lectures, on the rare occasions that she does fall asleep, her snoring can be disruptive to others. Pip has acknowledged this and has agreed to work on maintaining her focus and participation during class.

A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of welcoming Jennifer Nash () Registered Nutritionist, to speak to our nutrition and dietetic students about her incredible work exploring the impact of the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) and co-developing a nutrition education curriculum with .

Jennifer’s session sparked so many meaningful and critical conversations about the role of nutrition education in shaping children’s long-term wellbeing. We explored how to teach nutrition in engaging and developmentally appropriate ways, and how to move beyond black-and-white, rule based thinking to lay the groundwork for healthy long-term relationships with food.

The nutrition curriculum that Jennifer co-created with Body Happy introduces children to the function and joy of food—where it comes from, what it does for our bodies, food practices and traditions across different cultures, and how to notice internal signals around eating - like hunger, satisfaction, and fullness.

We also discussed the complex terrain of school-based weight monitoring—recognising the intent behind the NCMP, while also building awareness of the emotional and mental health consequences of weighing children in schools.

It was such an important conversation about approaching health and education beyond weight-centric models—empowering the next generation of practitioners with a more critical and holistic lens through which to approach childhood nutrition.

Loved being back at the University of Surrey today speaking with second-year dietetic students about childhood obesity. Coming full circle from my own undergraduate days here to now sharing perspectives as a practitioner was such a rewarding experience! 🏫💫

We shared some really thought-provoking discussions examining how childhood obesity is monitored and managed in the UK. We talked about the about the delicate balance required when working with children - how do we promote healthy eating and movement without inadvertently fostering body consciousness or patterns of disordered eating?

The students asked some really insightful questions and shared their own observations about the limitations of BMI-focused interventions.

So inspired by this next generation of dietitians who are thinking deeply about how to support children’s wellbeing in all its dimensions! 💕

Unconditional permission to eat might feel like a rebellious act at first—especially when you start incorporating previously ‘forbidden’ foods. This process can stir up a wide range of emotions, and that’s completely normal.
You might be thinking, ‘Surely I need food rules to control myself around tasty foods??? Can I really trust myself and just listen to my body???’
But here’s the thing: It’s that very belief—the idea that you can’t be trusted with certain foods—that intensifies their appeal. The first step to truly listening to your body is letting go of the rules themselves. Only then can you begin to rebuild self-trust around food.
