In the news this week, new statistics show 20% of births were planned caesarean sections and 25.1% were emergency caesareans.

Caesareans can be life-saving for both mothers and babies. As rates continue to rise, supporting comfort, mobility and wellbeing during pregnancy becomes increasingly important.

My first baby was born vaginally following induction at 37 weeks. My second was a planned caesarean section at 37 weeks due to concerns about what was thought to be pre-eclampsia again, alongside severe pelvic girdle pain (then commonly called SPD).

As it turned out, It wasn't pre-eclampsia at all - it was Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome ('APS'), but that's for another post!

Like many women, I had assumptions about what recovery from a caesarean might be like. In my case, I actually recovered much more quickly from my c-section than I did my first birth.

Every pregnancy and every birth is different. Sometimes a c-section is the safest option for mother, baby, or both.

As a perinatal osteopath in Wi******er, my role isn't to determine how a woman gives birth. My role is to help her stay as comfortable, mobile and supported as possible during pregnancy and after the birth, whatever the journey looks like.

Have you had a caesarian birth?

Was your recovery what you expected?

Were you offered "seeding"?

I'd love to hear about your experience.

Shoulder pain and dysfunction is one of the main reasons women make an appointment to see me for gentle osteopathic treatment. Quite often the pain appears to come out of the blue, so a thorough case history taking and examination are useful tools to get to the root cause.

Happy 15th birthday to Hagrid! Not sure how many years that equates to in human years, but it’s lots! The boys are Australian Service Dogs - bred to be disability assistance dogs. Even though they’re related, they have totally different temperaments - but both are fun, loving, and part of the family.

Happy birthday to Beasley! 14 today! My two don’t remember home without the dogs they’ve grown up with.

Here’s the link to donate to to The Beautiful Births Foundation - a charity in which midwives share their knowledge and sterile birthing kits to reduce maternal and newborn mortality. In some countries today you have a 77% higher chance of dying in childbirth. Please donate to this great cause run by midwife Erika and her husband Adrian Thompson. Every bag of coffee you buy helps - or simply donate what you can afford to. Thank you!

Cancer - hot flushes - night sweats - having trained at the Marie Curie hospice with BMAS years ago, I joined their Oncology Group for therapists. Every 6 weeks we cover a different relevant topic.
This week we were given two talks on research and efficacy of the NADA protocol on treating hot flushes and night sweats post cancer treatment - for both men and women. Relevant obviously for hot flushes and night sweats that have nothing to do with cancer.
