Today sees the publication of the Nottingham Ockenden Maternity Review, the largest maternity review in NHS history.
The report contains difficult and distressing accounts from women, birthing people and families. Please take care of yourself if you choose to read the report or follow the media coverage.
One of the strongest themes running throughout the review is that too many women and families felt they were not listened to during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.
Listening to women, birthing people and families is at the heart of every Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP). Our role is to ensure that the experiences, views and voices of local families help shape and improve maternity and neonatal services. We believe that everyone deserves to be heard, respected and involved in decisions about their care.
If the coverage of this report raises concerns, worries or emotions for you, please remember that support is available. If you are currently pregnant, your community midwife and maternity team are there to support you. If you have experienced difficult or traumatic maternity care, please reach out to your GP, health visitor, maternity team or specialist support services.
Birth Trauma Association – support and information for people affected by traumatic birth experiences
Make Birth Better – peer support and resources for processing birth trauma
PANDAS Foundation – support for parents experiencing mental health difficulties during pregnancy and after birth

Your voice matters. Your experience matters. Listening must be at the centre of safe, compassionate maternity care. 💜
