This week, we're sharing the stories of some of the wonderful people we support as part of Learning Disability Week.
Meet David and Jodie.
We are a married couple who happen to have learning disabilities, but there is so much more to us than that.
We share a home, a life, and a love that has grown over many years. We enjoy spending time together, making plans for the future, celebrating special occasions, and supporting one another through life's ups and downs. Like any married couple, we have our own personalities, interests, dreams, and routines.
We receive support to help us live independently and achieve the things that matter to us, but our disabilities do not define who we are. Sometimes people see the label before they see the person. They see our support needs before they see our strengths, our achievements, and the lives we have built together.
The theme "Do You See Me?" is about looking beyond disability and recognising us as individuals. See our love, our commitment, our sense of humour, our choices, and our right to live the life we want. See us as husband and wife, neighbours, friends, and active members of our community.
When you truly see us, you see people with hopes, ambitions, and valuable contributions to make, not just people who receive support.
Do you see our disability, or do you see us? π
