EXERCISE & PARKINSON’S 🧠💪
As part of my Master’s research, I had the opportunity to coach a man living with young-onset Parkinson’s.
This wasn’t about simply giving him a gym programme.
We began with a full assessment of his individual needs, physical capabilities and personal goals. From there, I designed a programme specifically for him, with regular reassessment throughout. As his performance changed, the exercises were modified and progressed accordingly.
That individualised approach matters.
Parkinson’s UK highlights strong evidence supporting physical activity for people with Parkinson’s. A major review of more than 150 studies involving over 7,000 people found physical activity can benefit movement and quality of life. Parkinson’s UK also emphasises that there is no one-size-fits-all approach — exercise should reflect how Parkinson’s affects the individual. (Parkinson’s UK)
More recently, Parkinson’s UK has stressed the importance of professionals being able to prescribe and deliver exercise programmes tailored to individual needs. (Parkinson’s UK)
Assess. Prescribe. Reassess. Adapt. Progress.
Exercise isn’t just about getting stronger — for people living with Parkinson’s, it can be an important part of managing symptoms and maintaining function, independence and quality of life.
