European Fencing Confederation The EFC is the international body charged with the promotion and development of fencing in Europe. In 2009, the EFC passed its articles of confederation.

The European Fencing Confederation (EFC) was founded on 26th October, 1991 in Vienna, Austria. Formerly established under the name “Union Européenne d’Escrime”, it was renamed into the English name a few years later. Every year the EFC organizes the European Championships, on senior, junior and cadet levels. Other goals are to promote and develop fencing in Europe, to facilitate technical collabor

ation between the different members, to coordinate and improve the teaching of fencing in Europe and to represent fencing to European authorities. The work in youth and veterans is exemplary. For instance, there is a cadet circuit which is unique in the world, also the EFC established a U23-European Championship to assist talented athletes not to give up the sport. There is also a championship for veterans and much more. The international body, charged with the promotion and development of fencing in Europe, consists of 42 member countries and therefore it is the continental confederation with the most active members under the authority of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) . The EFC annually applies for more than 4000 FIE-licences – that’s almost three times more than any other continental confederation. The Executive Committee elects the members of commissions and councils that deal with specialized areas like competition, veterans, promotion, referees, technical requests, training, athletes, finance, handicapped, medical and women.

Excellence in fencing is not only about what happens between two athletes on the piste.

Throughout every competition, referees carry an enormous responsibility.
Their judgement, impartiality, composure and professionalism are essential to protecting the fairness and integrity of our sport often while making difficult decisions under considerable pressure.

For this reason, I am particularly pleased that, following the evaluation conducted by the EFC Referees Commission, the Executive Committee has recognised nine outstanding referees for their performances and contribution throughout the 2025/2026 season.
