SYSSA Students' and Young Scientists' Scientific Association of David Tvildiani Medical University

Students’ and Young Scientists’ Scientific Association (SYSSA) is a voluntary, membership-based, public association of students of Davit Tvildian Medical University(DTMU) and young scientists from among the academic staff of DTMU, which actively participates in scientific-organizational and research activities. The scientific association aims, by encouraging the scientific-research activities of students, to promote their involvement in both fundamental and applied medical research; It also helps students to participate in any kind of scientific research activities, conferences, and publication of their own works. With its activities, the society expresses its support to the Medical University in raising the quality and efficiency of training highly qualified personnel in the field of medicine.Formed initially as a modest association of three students in 2012, the Students’ and Young Scientists’ Scientific Association (SYSSA) of David Tvildiani Medical University (DTMU) has renewed DTMU’s tradition of annual conferences and has since organized scientific events biannually. SYSSA strives to promote the maintenance of increased interest in medicine and scientific research among students, which is the foundation for progress in science. It provides collaboration and partnership with various Georgian, as well as, foreign universities, hospitals, and scientific organisations. It aims to create an intellectually demanding, competitive, and challenging yet supportive atmosphere by providing opportunities for students to engage in scientific sessions and conferences apart from DTMU’s rigorous curriculum. As Ralph Waldo Emerson, an American essayist, lecturer, and poet – wrote, “Every artist was first an amateur”. SYSSA of Davit Tvildiani Medical University strives for the same in science. Students develop skills and gain experience in scientific research that will assist them in their future careers as medical doctors and especially, as scientific researchers. They learn how to conduct research in the field of their interest; how to publish and share their results at conferences that bring together students, doctors, and professors of different medical and scientific organizations, which is the basis for the development of science. The SYSSA took its start from the successful and now an annual event, “First Scientific Session: A. Nobel’s Day” on December 10th, 2012, held in MediClubGeorgia, which was the first session in Georgia dedicated to Alfred Nobel. It was dedicated to the scientific achievements that have received Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1901-2012) and that have made a special impact on the progress of modern medicine. Participants included foreign as well as Georgian undergraduate and Ph.D. students and professors from DTMU, Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU), and Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State Medical University (TSU). As one of the outcomes of the session’s success, Karaganda State Medical University of Kazakhstan hosted the scientific session. SYSSA consists of 170 members, Georgian, Indian, and Nigerian students of David Tvildiani Medical University. With still a lot to achieve and with the invaluable experience SYSSA has gained in leadership and organizational aspects of conferences during these three years, SYSSA hopes to continue its contribution to diversifying the experience of students, young scientists, and professors alike, and to create an exciting and challenging environment that gives an opportunity for academic development. By encouraging students’ scientific research activities, the scientific association aims to promote their involvement in both fundamental and applied medical research; It also helps students to participate in any kind of scientific research activities, conferences, and publication of their own works. The main objectives of the association’s activity:

Promoting the sustainability and development of the scientific environment of the university;
Increasing the motivation of students and young scientists towards scientific research and their solid foundation for future doctor activity in this important field;
Coordination of the scientific research and organizational-methodical activities of young scientists in relevant scientific areas for the field of medicine;
Recommending prospective young people to continue their studies, participate in scientific seminars and additional educational circles;
Promotion of scientific-research activities in the broad layers of society;

▪️მთავარი მოხსენება ანტიბიოტიკებისადმი რეზისტენტობისა და ანტიმიკრობული მართვის სტრატეგიების შესახებ;

▪️ვორქშოპი: „ხელოვნური ინტელექტის საბაზისო ცოდნა მომავალი ექიმებისთვის“;

▪️პოსტერული პრეზენტაციები, რომლებიც ჩვენი დოქტორანტი მკვლევრების მიერ შეფასდა;

🔷️ On June 13–14, the XI International Conference “Infection at the Crossroads” was held at Margot Old Tbilisi, organized by the Students’ and Young Scientists’ Scientific Association (SYSSA) of David Tvildiani Medical University.

👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ SYSSA brought together students, young scientists, and clinicians from universities across Tbilisi and beyond to tackle one of medicine's most pressing themes: the intersection of infection, inflammation, and disease.

The conference program included:
▪️Keynote Address on Antibiotic Resistance & Stewardship Strategy
▪️Workshop: AI Literacy for Future Physicians
▪️Poster Presentations evaluated by our PhD researchers
▪️Four packed scientific sessions covering everything from rare tropical co-infections and neuro-infectious diseases to psychiatric complications and autoimmunity, reproductive health, and the long shadow of COVID-19

⚕️ The range, depth, and energy in that room over June 13–14 reminded us exactly why we do this. Every case report, review and Q&A panel is what building the next generation of clinician-scientists looks like.

💟 Thank you to our speakers, supervisors, chairs, presenters, and everyone who showed up and made this happen.
