UHAS Graduates 1,097 at 2nd Session of 10th Congregation

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) has conferred degrees on 1,097 students during the second session of its 10th Congregation, held on Friday, May 15, 2026, at the Cedi Auditorium, Sokode-Lokoe, Ho. The graduating class comprised 967 undergraduates and 130 postgraduates from the School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences, School of Nursing and Midwifery and Fred N. Binka School of Public Health. Many of the graduates were working healthcare professionals who pursued UHAS’ sandwich programmes while serving in hospitals, clinics, laboratories and communities across Ghana.

Presiding over the ceremony, the University Council Chairman, Professor Kodzo Gavua, praised faculty and staff for their dedication to training health professionals. He affirmed UHAS’ ambition to remain Ghana’s premier health training institution and highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Laboratory Complex and the Hohoe Campus–Fodome Site.

He appealed to government to complete outstanding projects such as the 5.3-kilometre internal road network at the main campus. Professor Gavua noted that UHAS has now produced over 14,617 health professionals since its first graduation in 2016.

The Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Professor Lydia Aziato, delivered the state of the University address, reporting that UHAS currently has 10,292 students across 23 undergraduate and 25 postgraduate programmes, supported by 879 staff. She revealed that the University received 14,430 applications for the 2025/2026 academic year but admitted only 2,021 students due to infrastructure and staffing constraints, describing the figure as “woefully low.” She appealed for government clearance to recruit more academic staff. Professor Aziato also emphasized UHAS’ strong impact in health research and the consistent success of its graduates in national professional examinations.

Her Excellency Dr. Eunice Brookman-Amissah, former Ambassador and member of Ghana’s Council of State, delivered the 10th John Evans Atta Mills Leadership Lecture on May 14, 2026, under the theme From Knowledge to Action: Bridging Africa’s Productive Health Gap – The Role of Health Training Institutions. She spoke on the same topic during the graduation ceremony as the Guest Speaker where she reiterated the importance of continuous learning, compassion and humility in healthcare. During the ceremony, UHAS conferred an Honorary Doctorate on Dr. Brookman-Amissah in recognition of her outstanding contributions to health and public service.

The Volta Regional Minister, Honourable James Gunu, representing the Government of Ghana, congratulated the graduates and assured UHAS of government’s commitment to addressing its infrastructure deficit. He highlighted interventions under President John Dramani Mahama, including the free primary healthcare initiative, strengthening of the National Health Insurance Scheme and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (“Mahama Care”), which expands coverage beyond NHIS provisions. He confirmed that all teaching and regional hospitals have been connected to the Mahama Care software platform.

The second session of the 10th Congregation underscored UHAS’ mission of practical training, research and community service. With its growing alumni base, the University continues to produce competent and compassionate healthcare professionals dedicated to serving Ghana and beyond.
