🦟 ELEPHANTIASIS: A NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASE WE MUST NOT IGNORE THIS RAINY SEASON

As Ghana experiences increased rainfall and flooding in some parts of the country, it is important to raise awareness about Elephantiasis (Lymphatic Filariasis), one of the world's neglected tropical diseases.

Elephantiasis is caused by tiny parasitic worms that are transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes, particularly species of Anopheles, Culex, and Aedes. Repeated mosquito bites over time can lead to infection of the lymphatic system, resulting in severe swelling of the legs, arms, breasts, or ge****ls.

⚠️ Common Signs and Symptoms
• Persistent swelling of the limbs (especially the legs)
• Thickening and hardening of the skin
• Pain and discomfort
• Reduced mobility and disability
• Social stigma and psychological distress

🌧️ Why Should We Be Concerned During the Rainy Season?
Flooding and stagnant water create ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. An increase in mosquito populations can increase the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, including lymphatic filariasis.

✅ How Can We Protect Ourselves?
• Sleep under insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
• Eliminate stagnant water around homes and communities.
• Keep gutters and drainage systems clean.
• Participate in community mass drug administration programs when available.
• Seek medical attention if you notice unexplained swelling of any part of the body.

Public health is everyone's responsibility. By improving environmental sanitation and preventing mosquito breeding, we can help reduce the burden of elephantiasis and other mosquito-borne diseases in Ghana.

MOH COMMENDS GHANA POLICE SERVICE FOR ARREST OF ALLEGED RECRUITMENT FRAUDSTER

1. The Ministry of Health commends the Ghana Police Service for the arrest and prosecution of Isaac Adu Gyamfi, who is alleged to have defrauded unemployed health professionals under the false pretense of securing employment within the Ghana Health Service.

2. Available information indicates that the suspect allegedly collected substantial sums of money from several job seekers after falsely claiming he could facilitate their recruitment into the health sector.
3. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect has been arraigned before court and remanded into police custody pending further proceedings.

4. The Ministry reiterates that recruitment into the health sector is conducted strictly through approved and transparent processes. No individual, group, or intermediary has been authorized to sell recruitment slots, offer protocol placements, or influence employment decisions in exchange for money.

5. The Ministry strongly urges all health professionals and job seekers to refrain from making payments to anyone claiming to facilitate recruitment. Persons approached by such individuals should immediately report the matter to the nearest police station or notify the Ministry through its official communication channels.

6. The Ministry is also actively pursuing other cases involving recruitment fraud and related acts of deception. It remains committed to working with the appropriate law enforcement agencies to investigate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals engaged in such illegal activities, and will continue to take all necessary measures to protect the public from recruitment scams.

7. The Ministry remains committed to working closely with law enforcement agencies to identify, arrest, and prosecute all persons involved in recruitment-related fraud and to protect the integrity of the recruitment process.

The Colleges of Health Teachers' Association of Ghana (COHTAG) has officially been incorporated as a legal professional body in the Republic of Ghana. The association is now registered as COLLEGES OF HEALTH TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION OF GHANA LBG, under the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992) as a Company Limited by Guarantee by the Office of the Registrar of Companies.

This milestone represents an important step toward strengthening the collective voice of tutors in Health Training Institutions across the country. Health educators play a vital role in preparing the next generation of health professionals who form the backbone of our national health system. Establishing a formal professional association provides a structured platform to promote academic excellence, professional networking, research development, and policy engagement within the health training sector.

The association will work collaboratively with key stakeholders including the Ministry of Health, health training institutions, regulatory bodies, and development partners to advance the quality of health education and contribute to the development of a competent health workforce for Ghana.

The formal incorporation of COHTAG also creates new opportunities for professional development, capacity building, research collaboration, and advocacy for the welfare and recognition of health tutors nationwide.

We extend our profound appreciation to all founding members, colleagues, and stakeholders whose dedication and commitment made this historic achievement possible.

As we embark on this new chapter, we remain committed to building a strong, credible, and impactful professional association that will contribute meaningfully to health systems strengthening and the advancement of health education in Ghana.
