The festive season is often a celebration of family, connection and food!
Everywhere you go; homes, workplaces, restaurants, and social gatherings you'll find an abundance of delicious local and international dishes. While it's a time to enjoy great meals, it's also a time to be intentional about our choices.
The question is: Do you tend to overindulge, or do you enjoy everything in moderation?
About a 5 years ago, I had the opportunity to join the NewDay Show with Berla Mundi to discuss practical nutrition tips for navigating the festive season without compromising your health.
Here are some of the key takeaways from that conversation:
âś… Do's
• Eat until you're about 80% full before leaving home if you're attending an event. This can help reduce unnecessary snacking on high-fat, high-sugar foods.
• Choose food from trusted vendors or hosts who maintain good hygiene practices to reduce the risk of foodborne illness.
• Stay hydrated throughout the day. Sometimes what feels like hunger is actually thirst.
❌ Don'ts
• Avoid foods with unusual smells or signs of spoilage, especially meat, dairy, and seafood.
• Don't overeat simply because there's plenty of food available.
• Don't rely on alcohol or sugary drinks as your primary festive beverages.
• Don't eat too quickly. Slowing down gives your body time to recognize when you're satisfied and helps prevent overeating.
The festive season is about creating memories—not food regrets. Enjoy your favorite meals, but remember that balance is key.
