⚠️⚠️⚠️Today marks 60 years of the COUNTERCOUP (Northern military officers vs Igbo military officers which lead to the Biafran war) and DESTROYED NIGERIA 🇳🇬 July 29th 1966-2026 by Dr Kemi Olunloyo 7/29/26⚠️⚠️⚠️
July 29th 1966
Today marks 60 years😞I remember my uncle Adekunle Fajuyi and his boss Nigeria’s head of state Aguyi Ironsi. I was about to turn 2yo that summer. The July 1966 counter-coup in Nigeria was a bloody military mutiny on July 29, 1966, staged by Northern officers. It overthrew the military government of Major-General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, resulted in his assassination, and brought Lieutenant-Colonel Yakubu Gowon to power, severely escalating ethnic tensions and leading directly to the Nigerian Civil War.
Key Events and Casualties
* Date: July 29, 1966
* Leaders Lost: Head of State Major-General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi and Western Region Military Governor Lieutenant-Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi were abducted and killed in Ibadan.
* Human Cost: Over 300 Igbo military officers and soldiers were killed in the mutiny and the Igbo community in Makurdi, Benue state🇳🇬
* Aftermath: The violence spilled over into widespread riots and targeted killings of tens of thousands of Igbo civilians living in Northern Nigeria later that year.
Causes of the Uprising
* Retaliation: Northern soldiers viewed the January 1966 coup—which had killed Northern political leaders like Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Premier Ahmadu Bello—as an ethnically skewed plot led mostly by Igbo officers.
* Political Friction: Anger grew over Aguiyi-Ironsi's introduction of Unification Decree No. 34, which sought to abolish the federal system in favor of a centralized unitary government, raising fears of Northern political domination.
Long-Term Impact
* Rise of Gowon: Lieutenant-Colonel Yakubu Gowon was installed as the new head of state to hold the fractured country together. He is still alive. I will NEVER like Gowon. This is how the Igbo vs Hausa and Yoruba conflict started.
* Path to Civil War: Failed political reconciliations (such as the Aburi Accord) following the counter-coup failed to ease the deep mistrust, culminating in the secession of the Eastern Region (Biafra) and the onset of the Nigerian Civil War in July 1967.
These are the events Nnamdi Kanu educated Nigerians about even though he was not born yet. Nigerian government removed history from schools in 2003 and felt they could FORGET. General TY Danjuma executed my uncle and Ironsi when Ironsi was visiting Ibadan on a state visit. Their army thugs entered the government house to take Ironsi, Fajuyi said “I’m following my boss. You cannot take him.” They were both personally executed by Danjuma, the same COAS and Defense Minister who said the army 🪖and police 👮🏽♂️ collude together to unalive Nigerians. Danjuma is 87yo and lives in Banana Island, Lagos. He also executed Col Dimka who unalived Murtala Muhammed.
The people I highlighted
are familiar to you and
now you can see that Nigeria

“EMILOKAN PHENOMENON “
Imagine the same Dimka
Danjuma killed for killing
Murtala Muhammed was part of
the 1966 counter coup. MM
himself took part, IBB, late Abba Kyari
and even late Vatsa who IBB killed, his childhood
friend. Abacha was also involved.
You are still running to get PVC instead of a revolution. I’ve done my part, not coming back. You chased me out, I’m now retired enjoying my life.
