WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY 2019

Every year, on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.

Blood is an important resource, both for planned treatments and urgent interventions. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. Blood is also vital for treating the wounded during emergencies of all kinds (natural disasters, accidents, armed conflicts, etc.) and has an essential, life-saving role in maternal and perinatal care.

A blood service that gives patients access to safe blood and blood products in sufficient quantity is a key component of an effective health system. Ensuring safe and sufficient blood supplies requires the development of a nationally coordinated blood transfusion service based on voluntary non-remunerated blood donations. However, in many countries, blood services face the challenge of making sufficient blood available, while also ensuring its quality and safety.

2. Blood in the Phlegm:
People with lung cancer will cough up blood if the cancer has spread to bronchi. Even though a variety of reasons can cause blood in the sputum, but nobody should ignore it.

3. Chest Pain:
One of the most obvious signs of lung cancer is chronic pain in the chest which gets intense while you are breathing or even laughing.

the cancer spreads to other parts of the body, then those areas are likely to be affected by ache and discomfort. If this pain progresses to your shoulders and back, then talk to your doctor for examination

4. Bone Pain:
If the lung cancer has progressed to other organs in your body, than you may feel pain in your bones and joints.

Even though back pain might not seem related to cancer in the lungs, but as per many oncologists, it can be a prominent early sign.

5. Swelling in the Neck and Face:
When the lung cancer spreads, it starts pressing against the superior vena cava which is the large blood vessel returning blood to the heart.

This makes your neck and face swell. If you observe such swelling, then do not delay talking to your Doctor.

THE DANGERS OF TRAMADOL ABUSE

Those who misuse or abuse tramadol are at risk for developing an addiction. In some cases, even people who follow their doctor’s directions can become addicted.

After frequent, prolonged tramadol use, many people develop a tolerance to the drug. This means they have to take larger doses to feel the drug’s effects. Along with tolerance, tramadol abusers may experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop using the drug. Tramadol withdrawal can cause irritability, depression and flu-like symptoms.

Undesirable effects of tramadol abuse:

-Suicidal thoughts
-Dizziness
-Weakness
-Sleepiness
-Insomnia
-Headache
-Shaking
-Heartburn
-Panic attacks
-Vomiting
-Diarrhea
-Cardiac arrest
-Itching
-Sweating
-Seizures

In worst-case scenarios, an overdose can result in coma or death. Much like with opioids, a fatal overdose can look peaceful. The users may simply look like they're falling asleep when, in reality, their bodies are shutting down. They forget how to breathe, and essentially suffocate to death.

The risk of an overdose is even more pronounced if Tramadol is mixed with other drugs and alcohol.

HOW POOR SLEEPING HABITS AFFECTS YOUR HEALTH

- POOR COORDINATION INCREASING RISKS OF ACCIDENTS

When we are suffering from sleep debt, we are putting ourselves at risk from injury. One reason behind this is that we may suffer from daytime sleepiness which can affect our coordination. This is dangerous especially when you are driving or commuting, as there is a high chance of you getting into an accident.

- HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Sleep debt can also put you at risk from suffering from high blood pressure, erratic blood sugar levels, and even put your heart in danger of heart attack or stroke. You may also acquire chronic insomnia because of this which is another type of sleep disorder.

- HORMONAL IMBALANCE

Hormonal imbalance is likely to happen as well, especially when your body is not functioning 100%. When your hormones are out of whack, there is a huge chance that other health problems may appear such as weight gain, bloating, mood swings, and the like.

Sleep debt is something that cannot be reversed easily. If you want to catch some good sleep, you can start with getting short naps within the day, or you can start a sleep schedule and stick to it every day, including weekends

ALCOHOL, THE LIVER AND AGING

As we get older and our bodies change, our ability to tolerate alcohol changes too.

The changes you face as you get older are important to understand when thinking about drinking alcohol. Different health issues may develop as you age. You may also need to take more medications than you used to, or different medications that are affected by alcohol.

Here are some potential complications to consider and discuss with your healthcare provider:

• High blood alcohol concentration: As we age, muscle mass is replaced by fat tissue. This means that an older person who drinks the same amount as someone younger will generally have a higher blood alcohol concentration (BAC). The amount of water in our body also goes down with age, contributing to higher BAC.

• Slower processing of alcohol: The older you are the longer alcohol stays in your liver before it moves into the general bloodstream or is metabolised – increasing the risk of damage to your liver. Blood flow to your liver is decreased, along with your liver enzymes.

• Increased risk of accidents: Physical and mental functions (including coordination, vision, hearing and reflexes) become impaired as you age, putting you at higher risks of accidents such as falls, slips or car crashes.

• Potential medication interaction(s): If you take over-the-counter or prescription medication, you should always seek the advice of your doctor before drinking due to the possibility of side effects. Medications that are known to react with alcohol include:
- Anti-anxiety drugs
- Antibiotics
- Antidepressants
- Antihistamines
- Blood thinners
- Diabetes drugs

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT IMPETIGO

Impetigo is a common skin infection that often affects children. It is a contagious bacterial infection.
Staphylococcus bacteria live on the skin and are mostly harmless, but they can cause an infection if they enter damaged skin.
Another bacterium called Streptococcus can also cause impetigo. This bacteria can spread from person to person by skin contact, touching objects, or sneezing and coughing.
Impetigo most commonly affects the face, particularly the area around the nose and mouth, but it can affect any part of the body where the skin is broken. This includes the scalp. Impetigo can also spread from the original site to other areas of the body.
Impetigo causes red sores on the skin that burst, leaving a yellow-brown crust. It can also cause large, fluid-filled blisters that break open and leave a sore. These sores and blisters often itch and can be painful.
Impetigo is highly contagious. A person can avoid passing on the infection by staying away from school or work, washing their hands often, and covering sores or blisters with a bandage.

TREATMENT

A doctor can prescribe an antibiotic cream to treat impetigo. A person applies this cream directly to the affected areas of skin. Signs of impetigo should clear up in around a week.
Sometimes, a person may need to take antibiotic tablets. In rare cases, a doctor may recommend antibiotic injections.
