THE UNIVERSITY HEALTH SERVICES-KNUST COMMISSIONS NEW PHYSIOTHERAPY CENTRE AND CT SCAN UNIT TO ENHANCE HEALTHCARE DELIVERY.

The University Health Services of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has officially commissioned a state-of-the-art Physiotherapy Centre and a newly installed Computed Tomography (CT) Scan Unit to improve access to quality healthcare for students, staff, and the general public.

The commissioning ceremony, held at the University Hospital, brought together key university officials, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders. In attendance were the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson; Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. David Asamoah; Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Christian Agyare; and other distinguished guests.
Delivering his address, the Director of Health Services, Dr. Nana Kwame Ayisi-Boateng, recounted the journey leading to the installation of the CT Scan unit. He noted that the hospital had been without a functional CT Scan machine for several years following a breakdown, significantly affecting diagnostic services.

He explained that the successful installation of the new CT Scan machine was made possible through sustained engagements and a strategic public-private partnership with Spectra Health Limited.

Dr. Ayisi-Boateng further highlighted the remarkable growth of physiotherapy services at the hospital, which began in 2022 through a collaboration with the Department of Physiotherapy and Sports Science. From an initial 30 patients per month, the unit now attends to approximately 800 patients monthly, underscoring the increasing demand for rehabilitative care.

To address space constraints and enhance service delivery, the University Health Services undertook the innovative construction of a new Physiotherapy Centre using repurposed shipping containers. This initiative was made possible through the support of University Management and the Works and Physical Development Directorate.

The Director emphasized that the successful completion of both projects reflects the strength of strategic partnerships, effective inter-departmental collaboration, and a shared commitment to delivering quality, patient-centred healthcare.

He expressed profound gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and University Management, the Health Services Management Committee, partners including Spectra Health Limited, and all staff whose contributions made the projects a reality.

The commissioning of these facilities marks a significant step in strengthening healthcare infrastructure at KNUST and reaffirms the University’s commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery, training, and research.
