Here’s the final chapter of our open water safety series! There’s been so much to unpack but the risks are real and we really you to be safe 🙏

We’ve covered hidden hazards, gear, fatigue and post-swim care. If you missed it, catch up on our profile first, then come back here. Because now we’re talking about the emergencies that many of us don’t see coming until it’s too late.

🌊 Salt water toxicity — for all the dogs that love to chase toys and bite the water! Fresh water and enforced breaks are non-negotiable at the beach.

🫁 Aspiration pneumonia — water in the lungs doesn’t always show immediately. Signs can develop hours after a swim.

🦠 Leptospirosis — a bacterial risk that spikes after rain, in stagnant water and in areas with rat populations. Rinse your dog after any freshwater swim.

🟠 Sand impaction — dogs who retrieve toys on the beach, dig obsessively or mouth sandy objects can ingest enough sand to cause a life-threatening blockage.

We personally know of cases in every single one of these - which is why we’ve put this guide together. These accidents are preventable if you know what to look for 🙏

We’ve covered pool safety, now let’s talk about what’s waiting at the beach.

Open water in Hong Kong is beautiful - but completely different from a controlled environment like a pool. You are at the mercy of the elements and conditions can shift quickly - currents, hidden drop-offs, swells. Hazards most owners don’t think about until something goes wrong.

This is Part 1 of our final instalment in our water safety series (just because there is so much to cover!) 🐾

In this post, we’ll look at:
💧 Safe water
🌊 What’s beneath the surface
🦺 Gear — what they do and what they don’t
🪀 Toys — what’s best to use
😴 Fatigue, exhaustion and post-swim care

Swipe, save and share it with a fellow pawrent - it could be the difference between an epic day at the beach - or unwanted drama. No one’s asking you to be the fun police - we just want you and your pups to stay safe out there! ❤️

Coming up in Part 2: Medical emergencies every pawrent needs to know - aspiration pneumonia, saltwater toxicity, sand impaction - and what to do when things go wrong.

🙌 But we’ll get hands-on too!
🛟 We’ll show you how to choose the right gear, what to look for in a float jacket and how to get the right fit.
- We’ll practise with our gear but feel free to bring your own if you’d like us to do fit checks!

⛑️ Be prepared for accidents with basic first aid skills by Once And For All (OAFA) and learn about medical emergencies like aspiration pneumonia and sand impaction.

Summer days by the pool with your best puppers are meant to be fun. And they can be when you know how to keep everyone safe 💦🛟

As a canine hydrotherapist, I’ve spent thousands of hours watching dogs move through water - but a big part of my job is also about managing our own pool water and ensuring a safe, clean and hygienic environment for all of us to work in.

So I’ve pulled together all that we’ve learnt through years of training and lived experience, into what I hope will be a complete guide to keeping your dogs safe in and out of the pool. Here’s to more years of adventures with our loyal companions! ❤️

Swipe through for our top pool safety tips 🐾 and I’d love to hear what’s the first thing you plan to do on your next pool day! 💦

And if you have a pup who needs a gentle introduction to water or who could some help with building confidence in water, we’re always here to help 🤗

Before we dive into pool safety and open water hazards, let’s clear the air and get some facts straight first.

Here are 5 water safety facts we’d like every pawrent to sit with, because the more we know, the better we can protect our dogs — both in and out of the water.

Swipe through and let me know which one surprised you or if you’re already your pup’s top lifeguard 🛟

Save this for your next dog day of summer or share it with a friend who needs this. Follow us for our complete water safety guide for both ends of the leash - be this summer!💧

This is not another AI-generated listicle or a roundup of things I Googled and repackaged. This is what formal hydrotherapy training and 15,000 swims (and counting!) have taught me about dogs and water safety over years of practice and lived experience.

Every year, as summer rolls in, we’ll hear the stories - near-drownings, aspiration pneumonia, sand impaction, exhaustion collapse. Dogs who started a summer day on a high and came out fighting for their lives.

We have the ability to prevent these — with better awareness, better education and being the cool head our dogs need us to be in the water.

So I’m putting this out there because summer is here, and the risks are real. Here are some lessons distilled from thousands of hours working with dogs in water:

💦 Most dogs who “don’t like water” often just had a bad introduction — and a calm, positive first experience changes everything.

💦 Real confidence is built in drops - slowly, safely and from small wins accumulated over time.

💦 Safety is the foundation of everything. A dog who feels secure moves better, heals better and feels better. Confidence grows from the inside out.

💦 Structure and guidance matters.

💦 I’ve seen first hand, that the most dangerous dog in the water is the (over)confident one whose pawrent has stopped watching because ‘they know what they’re doing’.

💦 We have to be the sensible adult who says “that’s enough” and enforce the breaks they’ll never choose for themselves.

💦 Rest is not negotiable. A dog who never stops risks tipping into hyperarousal — excitement that overrides self-regulation.

💦 Rest is when recovery happens.

💦 What worked last week may not work today. Always work with the dog in front of you, on the day.

Want more years of adventures with your best bud? Keep him water-safe!

The heat is on! And you’re ready for epic beach days and poolside play.

But summer is also when vet clinics see a spike in water-related emergencies — near-drowning, water intoxication, aspiration pneumonia, exhaustion collapse, heatstroke. These are traumatic, expensive - and mostly preventable.

So what’s going wrong?
Two big mistakes we see over and over:
1. Assuming all dogs swim naturally.
2. Believing water confidence = water safety.

“My dog loves the water, so they must be safe.” “He’s a strong swimmer. He knows what to do.”

Sorry, but no.
We’ve seen and heard of enough preventable injuries to know it’s time for a proper guide to water safety — for both ends of the leash. Because better awareness means more years of adventures together with your pups.

Let’s break it down:
⚠️Water confidence is NOT water safety ‼️

Water confidence is how your dog feels in water — entering willingly, splashing, retrieving, swimming. They’re not thinking “Is this safe?” They’re just following joy or drive.

So we have to do the thinking, making water safety OUR job as pawrents — recognising hazards, setting boundaries and knowing when to stop. It’s active, educated management of your environment. You’re the lifeguard.

Confidence belongs to your dog. Safety belongs to you.

We’ve built an extraordinary team - and we’re growing some more! 🐾

HEAL is a busy, veterinary-referred canine rehab and hydrotherapy centre, and we’re looking for people who want to make a transformative difference in the lives of our dogs.

We’re after:
💧 A qualified Canine Hydrotherapist — clinical, collaborative, thoughtful - not a ‘pool supervisor’
🐕 A Canine Rehab Assistant — our second set of eyes, a safe pair of hands, a gentle carer.

While each role is different, our team works to the same ethos - with kindness, clinical integrity and respect for the dogs and owners who trust us. Swipe through to see which role speaks to you!

Hydrotherapy is not just about rehab. It’s often something quieter - learning good movement. Because good movement builds strength, and strength builds confidence that the dogs cannot fake.

Take the Italian greyhound (or any greyhound, really.) Their bodies are built for speed and running - aero-dynamic, a deep chest and legs that go on forever. Water is not their medium.

But what I love about our work - we can make swimmers out of runners. Gently, patiently and by honouring their design while quietly expanding what they believe their body can do.

Water confidence isn’t about splashing in and hoping for the best. It’s built in drops, not waves. And when it clicks? That’s when the magic happens 💙
