What is Dyscalculia?

Overwhelmed by numbers? Struggle with analog clocks? These may be signs of dyscalculia, a learning difference in how the brain processes math.

Common characteristics and examples:
🔢Weak Number Sense: Numbers (e.g. “5”) feel abstract, not tied to quantity (“5 apples”)
🧮Basic Facts Difficulty: Memorizing multiplication tables, addition and subtraction is difficult
📐Mathematics Reasoning: Not intuitive to read analog clocks, use maps, or estimate distances

If these affect your daily life or learning, and the difficulties begin during the school years, you may consider a dyscalculia assessment.
1. Online Tests
Useful for preliminary screening, but cannot replace a formal assessment
2. Professional Assessment
- Includes clinical observations, interviews, and standardized tests such as the WIAT-calculation and reasoning assessments
- Rules out other causes, such as intellectual disability and global developmental delay, to confirm that the difficulty is “math-specific”

Support After Diagnosis

1. Multisensory Teaching: Makes numbers and symbols concrete, and allows learners to use their stronger sensory channels
👀Visual: Color coding, charts, drawings, and manipulatives (e.g., beads, building blocks)
👂Auditory: Verbal instructions, rhythm and songs
🖐Kinesthetic & tactile: Hands-on experiences, gestures and movement

2. Online Resources
A range of online resources, including intervention guides and accommodation checklists, are available to help identify suitable learning strategies

Mental Reset

Reset and Recharge

Finally, summer is here! It comes with a well-deserved break, but can you truly relax? Does your mind keep racing even when your body slows down?

If you want to reset and recharge this summer, here are a few tips:

1. Social Media Detox

Stress often comes from comparison. On Instagram or Facebook, we are flooded with posts about top grades, dream job offers, and vacations.

Feeling left behind? Uninstall your social media apps. You'll gain space to reflect on what you truly want and your own pace of life.

2. Solo Trip

Spend a night on a quiet island or explore a new neighbourhood. A change of environment keeps academic and career stress far away. Try to strike up a conversation with people you meet—their stories remind you how big the world is, and your worries seem smaller.

Sometimes, stepping away is the best reset button.

3. Sleep Well

Late nights are normal for students, but lack of rest can leave us irritable, unfocused, and emotionally drained. With classes on pause, why not turn off your alarm? Wake up naturally and feel clear-headed after 8 hours of quality sleep!

🌿 Refocus on Yourself

A mental reset is about bringing your focus back to yourself. This summer, let yourself be a little "selfish"—rest, recharge, and enjoy life. You'll find the strength and courage to embrace whatever comes next. 🌿✨

行程、交通、住宿、餐廳,再加上後備方案,J人的Excel表是旅程的定心丸;

J人可能提早一星期開始執拾,充電器、轉插器、常用藥品一應俱全;

J人喜歡早睡早起,按計劃遊覽,確保不會錯過重要景點;

When J and P people travel together...

One plans every detail, while the other goes with the flow. Are J and P people destined to clash on a trip? ✈️
Not at all—they can be the perfect travel duo!

1️⃣Before the Trip
The J person has an Excel sheet ready— itineraries, transport, hotels, restaurants, and backup plans.
For the P person, flights and accommodation are enough. Why plan every minute when the best moments often happen unexpectedly?
As the J person keeps things on track, the P person’s reminder is simple: “Relax—just enjoy the trip!”

2️⃣Packing
The J person may start a week in advance, with every essential packed—adapters, chargers, medication, and more.
The P person? Often starts the night before.
So you’ll hear:
"Hey, any extra charger?"
And the J person always does.
But the P person never forgets the fun extras, like cards or a portable speaker.

3️⃣On the Journey
The J person likes early starts, ensuring that no highlight is missed.
The P person loves to wander side streets, chat with locals, and change plans on a whim, leading to adventures that couldn’t be planned.
Different rhythms, a richer trip.

🌎 Why Are They Great Travel Partners?
The J person gives practical value through structure.
The P person gives emotional value through surprises.
The "Itinerary Manager" and "Fun Navigator" create a mix of order and freedom.

💬 Have you ever travelled with a J or a P person? What’s your most memorable experience? Share your story below! 👇✨

Feeling Stuck?

The semester is over! Whether you’re picking up a new language, trying a sport, or exploring a hobby, you may have moments where you feel like running in circles. It’s completely normal! You’re likely just experiencing the Learning Curve.

According to the Learning Curve Theory, progress doesn’t happen in a straight line but in a curve. The shape of the curve varies from person to person; it can include plateaus or sudden breakthroughs.

When things feel the hardest, you’re often in the critical “uphill” phase. A breakthrough is usually around the corner.

Here are ways to make the process easier:

1️⃣Break Big Goals into Tiny Steps

Instead of aiming to master Japanese overnight, start with memorizing 10 words per day. Small wins build momentum and keep you going.

2️⃣Focus on the Weak Spots

Instead of repeating what you handle well, put your energy into what challenges you most—whether it’s a tricky piano passage or a confusing grammar rule. Targeted practice is the fastest way to improve.

3️⃣Appreciate Your Progress
Learning comes with ups and downs. Instead of comparing yourself to others, remind yourself: “Struggling means I’m stepping out of my comfort zone.” Take a moment each day to appreciate the smallest progress—you’ve earned it.

When you feel stuck, maybe you’re on the verge of a breakthrough. Keep going—and enjoy the journey 🌿

The Summer I Did Nothing

Summer is finally here! Some people are diving into internships, picking up new skills, or working part-time. But if you don’t have any plans yet, you might be starting to feel anxious…or even guilty.

Pause for a moment—take a breath—and read this.

‼️Rethink What a Holiday Really Means

A holiday is meant for rest. And sometimes, true rest is just… doing nothing. We’ve become so used to chasing goals that we feel like we’re wasting time if we aren’t being productive. But what if doing “nothing” is actually one of the most meaningful things you can do?

Think about your last semester—rushing deadlines, surviving on four or five hours of sleep, and feeling exhausted. Your brain was likely running empty. If you keep pushing through the summer, you’re just setting yourself up for burnout. But if you truly rest, you’ll return with more energy, clearer focus, and greater creativity. That’s the real secret to “work hard, play hard”.

In a world that constantly tells us to achieve more, it’s easy to measure our value by what we accomplish. But here’s the truth:

You are not valuable because of what you produce. You are valuable because you are you.

If you don’t have plans for this summer, that’s perfectly okay. Enjoy the chance to relax. Don’t feel guilty—rest is vital. Rest gives your mind space to breathe and allows your body to recover. Once you’re recharged, you’ll be ready to take on new challenges. Rest is not a waste of time. It’s an investment in yourself.
