Many clinicians associate the Prechtl General Movements Assessment (GMA) with the early identification of cerebral palsy.
But that's only part of the story.
Research suggests that the quality of an infant's spontaneous movements may also provide valuable insights into later cognitive development, particularly in infants born preterm. Rather than reflecting motor function alone, General Movements offer a window into the developing nervous system.
For clinicians working in NICU follow-up, neonatal care, paediatrics, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and early intervention, this reinforces an important message:
Early observation is about understanding overall neurodevelopment—not just predicting motor outcomes.
Learning GMA equips clinicians with an internationally recognised, evidence-based assessment that strengthens clinical reasoning during one of the most important periods of infant brain development.
If you work with high-risk infants, this is a skill that can make a meaningful difference to early identification, follow-up, and intervention planning.
