These 10 changes do not necessarily mean cancer—but they are worth recording
Cancer can arise in many organs, so no single sign can confirm it. The changes below may also be caused by common non-cancerous conditions, but persistent, recurring or worsening changes are worth recording and discussing with a veterinarian.
1) A new or enlarging lump
2) A wound that does not heal or repeatedly bleeds
3) Change in weight or appetite
4) Persistent vomiting, diarrhea or bowel changes
5) Unusual discharge, bleeding or odor
6) Difficulty swallowing, chewing or eating
7) Persistent lameness, pain or reduced activity
8) Cough or altered breathing pattern
9) Change in urination or difficulty urinating
10) Marked change in energy, stamina or social behavior.
Once a month, spend five minutes checking your pet from nose to tail. Take a photo, measure the area and note the date and change. This record can help the veterinary team understand the trend, but it cannot replace examination, sampling or imaging.
