Meet Brinley. Her mom, Shelby, wears her heart on her sleeve because Brinley was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease at just 4 months old. She was an amazing sleeper when one night she suddenly woke up every 30 minutes. Shelby decided to wait it out, but that evening she spiked a fever of 104°. She took her to a walk-in clinic. By then, she had a rash on her stomach, back, and groin. She was diagnosed with an ear infection and given amoxicillin. After 72 hours, she was still having fevers, despite alternating Tylenol and ibuprofen. She was inconsolable, her eyes were red, and she developed severe diarrhea They took her to another clinic where they said she had a double ear infection and adjusted her antibiotics. Around that time, Shelby's friend who is a pediatric RN, mentioned that Brinley's symptoms sounded like KD. But, the physician dismissed the idea. After two days of poor feeding, crying, and relentless diarrhea, they took her to the ER. She was diagnosed with dehydration and, again, assured it wasn't KD. The next day, her eye was swollen and her fingers began peeling. Shelby knew something was wrong and took her to their family doctor. This time, she was told it was pink eye and given eye drops. The following morning, her other eye was swollen.

After 13 days of fighting for answers, they took her back to the ER. Bloodwork was repeated and she was assessed by a pediatric resident who found an enlarged lymph node, heart murmur, and immediately recognized the concern. Brinley was started on IVIG, steroids, and other supportive treatments. Thankfully, all of her echos have been normal. Her mom says, "today, Brinley is back to being the happy, healthy baby she has always been. I share our story to encourage parents and healthcare providers to keep Kawasaki disease in mind when a child has a persistent fever and the pieces don't seem to fit. Trusting parental instincts and recognizing the signs early can make all the difference."
