Why Are Hydrophilic Materials More Suitable for Prosthetic Eyes?

Traditional prosthetic eyes are mostly made of PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), a material that is inherently hydrophobic. While it is durable and offers high aesthetic realism, its hydrophobic surface does not interact well with the tear film on the ocular surface.

Hydrogel soft prosthetic eyes, on the other hand, are hydrophilic. They not only allow oxygen permeability and sustained drug release, but also enhance rotational mobility through a "suction cup effect." Their long-standing drawback, however, has been relatively poor aesthetic realism. Although the most commonly used rigid polymer prosthetic eyes (PMMA) are hydrophobic and valued for their realism and durability, from a physiological comfort perspective, a hydrophilic surface is clearly the better choice.

But in 2026…

Hong Kong has achieved a key breakthrough in this field. Research institutions such as the Hong Kong Prosthetic Eye Research Institute have been continuously advancing innovations in ophthalmic biomaterials, developing novel hydrogel formulations that more accurately mimic natural ocular tissues.

Led by prosthetic eye specialist Jin Huibo, the research team has combined advanced pigmentation techniques with precision manufacturing processes to successfully create a hydrogel prosthetic eye that delivers both the comfort of hydrophilic materials and exceptional aesthetic realism. In terms of iris color, vascular texture, and overall three-dimensionality, it achieves a level of lifelikeness previously possible only with rigid PMMA prosthetics—truly achieving "the real in the unreal."
