We are glad to share with the community our participation in recent scientific conferences, where we discussed water quality in Utila.

Since 2024, team member Madison has been studying water quality in Utila. She has analyzed 18 different types of perfluoroalkyl substances and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) commonly known as “forever chemicals”. PFAS are widely used, long lasting chemicals, components of which break down very slowly over time.

We found that PFAS concentrations varied across household water storage types. Wells in our sample were not affected by PFAS contamination. Because of their widespread use and their persistence in the environment, many PFAS are found in the blood of people and animals all over the world and are present at low levels in the environment. Scientists around the world are still trying to understand how to detect PFAS in the water, air, soil, animals and plants and how they might affect human health. Desde 2024, Madison, miembro de nuestro equipo, ha estado estudiando la calidad del agua en Utila. Se han detectado 18 tipos diferentes de sustancias perfluoroalquiladas y polifluoroalquiladas (PFAS), comúnmente conocidas como "sustancias químicas persistentes". Las PFAS son sustancias químicas de uso generalizado y de larga duración, cuyos componentes se degradan muy lentamente con el tiempo.

Observamos que las concentraciones de PFAS variaban según el tipo de almacenamiento de agua doméstico. Los pozos de nuestra muestra no se vieron afectados por la contaminación por PFAS. We are happy to share that a paper about child signals of need in Utila has been published.

The team began studying how children signal need in Utila in 2022, working with the Utila community to create caregiver surveys. The surveys showed that crying, sadness, and temper tantrums were common in boys and girls across all ages, although signaling frequency decreased with age (especially for crying). Caregivers also reported that signals of need were more common with greater conflict between children and caretakers

Children who were sad more frequently were seen as needier within the household and needier children were more likely to receive investment. Caregivers were less likely to respond positively to child sadness or crying in situations of family conflict or child transgressions, and more likely for injuries and illness. That said, caregivers still responded to children positively in times of child transgressions (over 35% of the time) and family conflict (over 45% of the time), suggesting that children are successful in negotiating better outcomes at least some of the time, even if they were involved in the cause of the conflict.

El equipo comenzó a estudiar cómo los niños señalan necesidad en Utila en el año 2022, trabajando con la comunidad para crear encuestas para cuidadores. Las encuestas mostraron que el llanto, la tristeza y las rabietas eran comunes en niños y niñas de todas las edades, aunque la frecuencia de señalización disminuye con la edad (especialmente para el llanto). Los cuidadores también informaron que las señales de necesidad eran más comunes cuando hay un mayor conflicto entre los niños y los cuidadores.

Los niños que estaban tristes con mayor frecuencia eran vistos como más necesitados dentro del hogar y los niños más necesitados tenían más probabilidades de recibir inversión. Los cuidadores tenían menos probabilidades de responder positivamente a la tristeza o el llanto de los niños en situaciones de conflicto familiar o transgresiones infantiles, y más probabilidades de sufrir lesiones y enfermedades.

El Proyecto de Salud Infantil en Utila tiene como meta colectar información sobre la salud y el desarrollo infantil en la isla, con la misión de utilizar esta información para propósitos académicos y en beneficio de la comunidad.

Cada año en nuestro campamento infantil colectamos para cada niño:
-Altura, peso, y medidas de brazo, hombros, cintura y cadera.
-Preguntas sobre su desarrollo, salud, alimentación y círculos sociales.
-Presión arterial, muestra de saliva y una muestra de sangre.

Con esta información podemos entender más sobre como cada niño esta creciendo física y mentalmente, así como podemos visualizar resultados del grupo de estudio en conjunto.

The Utila Child Health Project's goal is to collect health and development data from children and caregivers that live in Utila, with the mission of using this information for academic purposes and in benefit of the community.

Each year at our Kids’ Camp we collect the following information from every child:
-Height, weight, and arm, shoulder, waist, and hip measurements.
-Questions about their development, health, diet, and social circles.
-Blood pressure, a saliva sample, and a blood sample.

This information helps us better understand how children in Utila are growing and developing, both physically and mentally. It also allows us to see overall patterns and results for the group as a whole.

We are very grateful to every family participating in the Utila Child Health Project for their trust and support!

El Proyecto de Salud Infantil en Utila ofrece dos hemogramas anuales libres de costo para los niños en el grupo de estudio. Estos hemogramas son importantes para evaluar la salud de cada niño en el momento y para poder comparar con previos resultados. The Utila Child Health Project offers two annual hemograms free of charge for the children in the study group. These hemograms are important for evaluating each child’s health at the time they are taken and for comparing the results with previous tests. This part of the work would not be possible without the support of AB Laboratory, who have provided us with their excellent service for several years.

Miss CJ and her family have been helping us all these years, without them Camp would not be possible! Every meal was prepared with care, patience, and so much attention, making sure the kids were not only well-fed but genuinely happy at the table. We appreciate it so much!

Esta actividad, que fue llevada a cabo desde diciembre hasta este mes de febrero, no hubiera sido posible sin el apoyo de The Safespot Utila.
